Has anyone altered the stock accelerator cable firewall moun

Post by qwertyd10n »

Hey everyone,

Well, I think I've resigned myself to the fact that the stock accelerator cable mount on the firewall won't work with the fancy, tall aluminum valve covers I have on my new engine. There only really seems to be two options to resolve the situation... Use different valve covers or alter the firewall mount for the cable in some way - possibly using a non-stock cable along with it.

That's where I'm hoping maybe others have done something different... If you've done anything to your accelerator cable, ideally moved it upward somehow, I'd appreciate explanations and hopefully even pics.

Cheers,
Dion

Unfortunately no pics, but when we installed a 5.0 with holley carb and a 1987 AOD trans we used the LOkAR cable setup with bracket, we had the Lokar cable coming out of the same hole in the part that bolts to the firewall & it works great,

I use LoKar. Great product! They also have a kick down cable for those of us that don't shift. I pull the pedal assembly and grind off the Ford cable ball. The LoKar deal uses a clevis at the pedal. I remove the cover off the firewall and the Ford cable. Using a hole where the Ford cable attached to the the firewall you can turn the cable up to the carb. Pretty easy install. The LoKar cable is really flexable and can make a sharp turn upward at the firewall to clear the valve cover issue you are having. Failing that you can raise the pedal on the firewall a bit by drilling new holes. You will wind up with a few extra holes after this deal anyway. Depending on where you are in reassembly you can weld a patch over the extra holes or just use metal duct tape. There is a China knockoff to the LoKar stuff on ebay, save a few bucks. I've used both with success.

Go with the LoKar stuff, it's pricey but the Quality is there

i have a lokar cable on my 66.... and i did take some pics

here is what you get with the universal kit

installing the cable on the firewall bracket.
Image
^^^ for this, if you have time weld a small washer to the backside of the bracket, do it... the hole for the original cable is to big. + i was in a hurry.

and under the hood.
Image

i did have to mod the hanging gas pedal by removing the ball socket and bending the rod to align it with the hole for the cable.
i dont have a pic of that though.

hope that helps Dion

Hey Bill,

Those pics definitely help me visualize what the Lokar cable looks like and how it works. Whatever cable I use, I'm going to have to move it up a little... do you think it would work to mount the Lokar cable through the hole just above the original location? I'm referring to the one I see you have a lock nut on...

Thanks,
Dion

yeah... just make sure the cable is aligned correctly through the hole or you will be buying a new inner cable like i had to do.

mine cable snapped off right at the pedal under the dash :( lucky i had a chalk line in the tool box... i had to MacGyver it home.

Bill,

That shiny rectangular plate that the cable is mounted through... did you make that? I don't have one of those...

This is what I came up with...

A shot of the whole cable in the engine compartment:

Some shots of how tight it still is even though I moved the cable into the upper hole:

And here are a couple shots of the bracket I fabricated to properly align the foot pedal with the cable coming through the firewall:

I took it for a drive this afternoon and it seems to work real good. When I rev the engine up while not moving, the valve cover doesn't seem to interfere with the cable... but I'm not sure how much the engine will torque up under load.

I just grind the ball off the accelerator linkage and connect the cable clevis directly to the accelerator. I drill a new hole in line with the accelerator and connect the cable directly to the firewall. I toss the Ford bracket and seal up the extra holes. Doing it this way will move the cable over towards center of the firewall and easily clear the rocker covers. The extra holes are an issue. I have used metal duct tape painted black or welded some 12 gage over the extra holes. IMHO!
