rams horns to down pipe connection

Post by montego69 »

Hi all,

Just bolted on a set of rams horns to my 1962 Y-block. They look way better than the original exhaust manifolds for sure!
I got my parts guy all confused though. I'm trying to figure out how a pipe bender is going to hook the rest of a fabricated exhaust to the the exhaust manifolds and I had thought there was some sort of flange and stubby pipe assembly that I would bolt on which the rest of the exhaust system would slip over and clamp to. He couldn't come up with anything from his exhaust component books.
What have you guys done to bolt pipes up to the rams horns? Am I stuck with fabricating a thick flange from scratch and welding it to a downpipe?

Thanks everyone,

Nick. You should be able to get pre-cut flanges at any good muffler shop, and if you measure carefully they can bend and weld the down pipes for you.
Be sure to use aluminized tubing when you do your exhaust.
I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.
Pardon me. Does your deaug bite?

Thanks Uncle Skip! I didn't think about calling the muffler shop directly and asking them. I was real caught up on providing them with an easy slip-fit connection point. They probably run into this all the time too.
Thanks again,

Most shops will not have flanges for these older manifolds. Back when I had rams horns, we ended up cutting the flanges off of the stock crossover pipe and used those. It does seem like newer flanges should work. It's a big round hole with two bolt holes. But I remember there was something about them that would not work. I can't remember what it was, though.

First I'd take a manifold to the shop to see if anything they have will work even though it will not match exactly.

Speedway Motors have a flathead exhaust flange that looks like it has the right proportions. They provide the measurements. See if it will work.

It's pretty easy to make your own flanges if need be.

Thanks for the Speedway tip. I also noticed that Speedway's manifolds come with a flange and short length of pipe. My manifolds came from Mummert's and only came with gaskets. He was also out of the stainless dipstick tubes at the time.
I'm going to take a manifold to the shop later today or Monday and have them check them out.
Just had another idea. My work has a waterjet cutter. It wouldn't take much to draw up a simple flange file. The waterjet could cout them out of whatever thickness steel i wanted. A nice 3/8" thick flange would work real nice...

Hi all,

I stopped in at an exhaust shop and picked up two flanges just like Speedway's: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Flathead- ... 34806.html.
The muffler shop can either bend a double or single flat, flare and use the flange. They can also weld it to the 2" pipe as well.
They also had a set of flanges like what the later 60's Ford vehicles came equipped with. They're not a flat flange in other words. I think they would work with a single or double flared pipe too. The exhaust nuts need to be the smaller 5/8 wrench hex size though to fit inside the stamping.
Just thought I'd update the post.
