It realy depends on the State.

In KS you can, but it has to be a Truck tag from the EXACT year and you have to regiter it as an Antque.

Check with your Tag office or DMV

i'd call your dmv. i didn't see anything about historic tags on georgias site, but i'll bet you can get them.

missouri also lets you register with a "year of manufacture" tag. good luck man.

That's a neat idea. I've seen them on the front of vehicles but didn't know you could use them legally. 8)

Texas will allow it as an antique, YOM (year of manufacture) tag, as a registered antique vehicle, or as a "vanity" tag on a regular registration for $15/yr. You must bring it in to the county registrar for examination, if it looks correct, they will allow it.

In Utah you can register old tags as long as you have a matching pair of them. I plan on doing that if & when I ever finish one of my trucks.

I don't think you can do anything like that at all in CA, but if anyone knows different, let me know. Thanks...

Yes, California has the YOM program. The Year Of Manufacture program allows you to register original plates on your vehicle, provided the number has not been reissued to a newer, later pair of plates.
They allow the '51-'56 long black plates with yellow letters, and the '57-'62 yellow plates with black letters. The '63-up black plates with yellow letters cannot be registered to your vehicle, unless they were on that vehicle all along. So if you have the blue plates, or any of the newer, modern plates, you cannot retrofit the '63-'70ish black plates.
I got a set of NOS 1951 plates for my 1955, still in the yellow envelope showing that they had been manufactured in the California Corrections Department.... that's right, prisoners really did make license plates.

Check with your local clerk office, Kentucky will allow 1965 plate on mine if I have a registered plate in the truck. Mark.
If you drive a Chevy, you better have a Good Wrench and even the name Dodge, tells you to avoid it!

I knew you could put the older plates back on pre-'63 in CA, but I didn't think I could for my '65. They used to sell matched sets of older plates at swapmeets here, guaranteed cleared, even for the post-'62s and claimed that they could be re-registered onto my '65, but I never bought into it. They usually sold for $75 or $80 bucks a set. Long ago, someone swiped my original back plate for the tags, so I lost mine and always wanted to put a gold-on-back set back on, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

pic of my 68 with correct yom tags in missouri. and yes, they are subject to antique tag rules. 1k miles a year, 100 air mile radius, but are tax and inspection exempt and the registration fee was one time only. sweet!
