paint question

Im thinking about using original lacquer black. Do you know if it will paint over the primers at ACE hardware stores? Or should i buy the lacquer primer to be on the safe side. What about puting clear lacquer over the black. Thanks for any and all comebacks neg or pos.

I'm assuming you are considering acrylic lacquer; if so I would definitely use lacquer primer, whether from Ace or others. Clear lacquer can be applied over the color coats. Since you are going with black,I would recommend giving the color a couple of days to cure, then block sanding the color prior to clear coating. This will yield a superior result to just shooting the clear over the fresh black. If you choose to sand, make certain you hit all areas; if not you will get the tiger-striping I just experienced while trying to avoid major loss of the metallic finish on my cheap-az paint.
Black lacquer yields an excellent finish but the durability leaves plenty to be desired. It is also becoming hard to find, so keep a little for touch-up purposes.
Use a dark or black primer if possible, the Duplicolor PaintShop silver I used had very little pigment, causing me to shoot many coats to achieve an even finish, thus ending up with a thick, chip-prone finish.

Shopline Urethane sprays similar to lacquer (what ever you "wet edge" is - it's what you've got, use a real small tip for finer droplets).
You can leave this as single stage or wet sand it and clear it.
It's reasonably priced and much harder than lacquer.
I am the last guy who would tell you he likes something better than lacquer but I just did........

X2, To me it's easier than lacquer; shoot and go, then come back and color sand if you wish, then clear it if you must- same shine, more durability,
easier on the atmosphere!

Lacquer looks great on a show car, but I have never had good results on a driver.

Single stage can be awesome, depending on where you live you can get higher voc rated paints and the stuffs awesome. Here in Cali we are choked way down on paint voc's so our "legal" single stage is not good, doesn't shine or have depth that base clear does. If your going single and have the good stuff then just use like products and pound on the top coat so you can color sand it out flat and buff it to perfection. One other though if you don't like to buff then try to get your top coat on even and flat because single stage doesn't buff too easy and likes to die back. Good luck

Donald, I've painted alot of acrylic lacquer over the years including several lacquer jobs on my mustang. I used to love lacquer but there's so many better paints out there that paint like lacquer but are so much more durable. Lacquer just isn't real durable.
