dMaking decision on a 66 4x4 in California.

Post by 64 f100 »

Truck is on the Stocton , CA. craigslist and is in Lodi. Decent looking truck but front fenders look wierd, and someone has installed a small steering wheel but the truck doesnot appear to have power steering. Nedd some information on how hard this truck would steer, and what gives with the flair on the front fenders?

those fenders do look different not sure what the deal is i think they may have been widened for the tires back ones look lipped too.
im sure you know the 66 f100 4x4 has the single speed t case- 4x4 is high range only
my wife never had any issues steering hers with the standard steering wheel so you should be able to turn it with the tiny one without too much effort
3.54 gearing is good for those trucks

Thanks ICe, the front fenders are fiberglass and are from some outfit in California. Supposed to be well made.

I dont think you can buy a 4x4 and get it that far for $5500.

Around here the guy would be asking 10k and claim it only needs finishing to be a show truck.

Lot of work and money spent on this rig. If all true I think the asking is fair. I especially like the high tech muffler clamp on the bottom of the steering column. Simple idea that works. I use DUI and hot wires myself. Windshield is no big deal. I'd run the warranty plate past ND over on FTE just for grins to see if this is indeed a real shorty 4x4. IMHO!

Steering is pretty tough on mine; I remember my F-250 manual steering being easier. Definitely want to do a power conversion; it'll just make it nicer. True it's only a high/low 4wd, but some of these have been swapped out... I got mine with an NP205 in it. The Dana 60 in the rear in the one you're looking at is a nice option; I have a Ford 9, I believe.

I'm just looking into that steering conversion while my 4 X 4 is just a bare chassie. (qwertyd10n) sent me this thread. It lays the whole thing out quite well.

I have 33x12.5x15 tires on my truck and without the power steering, it was pretty heavy to wheel around in tighter spaces and at slower speeds. I had the original 17" (I believe) steering wheel on it which made it manageable, but it still required some muscles to maneuver.

Since I added the power steering conversion, it's one finger steering... and I actually changed out the steering wheel to a smaller, 14.5" Grant steering wheel after I added the power steering and it's still as easy as pie!

Cheers,
Dion

Dion, I tried to get the thread you sent me on the subject posted, everything I tried to post wouldn't take you straight to it. That is the best description of the conversion/swap a guy could hope for. I rounded up the 4X4 box the next day will have the donor box Saturday. Thanks!

Well, she's mine now. Thought about flying out and driving it back, but the thought of a 2100 mile trip in that beast is a little daunting. Sure could find some good parts to bring back I'm thinkin. Athough, buying it and getting it home has left a large hole in my bank account. Wife is not happy about the hole. She doesn't know about the 64 Ranger shortbed I've been talking to the guy about.

Ahhh, come on Rich... I flew down to Madison, Wisconsin and drove mine back the ~1600+ miles to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Aside from a blown up rear differential in South Dakota, it was all good...
