So if you want to think about getting a car to run it has to be a CARRERA DIGITAL 132 car. I highly recommend getting one of the COT stock cars as they work well, and are tough. We have run many of the other cars Carrera sells and they are iffy at best.
It is possible to solder a 20 dollar computer chip into about any slot car however.
Now the reason the digital is worth the hassle is this. You can run SIX cars at the same time ! And there are lane change switchs you can throw from the hand held controller.now the track is routed three lanes but it actually one long lane that shuffles you thru bottom, middle, high, then back to the bottom. This makes the guy on the outside cross two lanes of traffic. Now while crashes happen, it is VERY fun when you learn to pass thru the pack and not wreck !
the cars run from 40-50 bucks generally.. Sometimes you can get a deal on ebay.

revel/monogram made some cool classic stockers, but these have to be chipped (extra 20) and they can be hit and miss on handling out of the box. I will also add you can't run a chipped car on a normal analog track so the chipping needs to be done with a track handy to get the wires correct...

Some of these classic stock cars are ballistic once working well, they are not as tough as the Carrera Stock car drive trains though. Also the rear axle design on the Class monogram type is a little shady and hard to repair.
