1962 F100 Flareside 292 Y-Block

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I just bought a 1962 F100 Short Bed Flareside with a 292 Y-Block and 4 Speed Manual. I haven't been able to find much information about production numbers and was wondering if anyone could tell me whether or not this is a rare F100? It's a project truck and needs a good amount of work but I'm just trying to get an idea of whether or not it would be worth doing a nut and bolt restoration?

It doesn't have the "Big" back window with the chrome accent and it isn't a custom cab. Also, it's only RWD.

Any information would really help.

Not really rare. Not a lot of "down in the weeds" production numbers info available as the records were destroyed by Ford.
Also, the BBW's were only offered on the Unibody's. I'm a big Y-Block fan myself.
BTW: Welcome to the site. Be sure to post pictures of your truck and keep us updated on your progress. Don't hesitate to ask questions as there is a lot of knowledgeable folks here on the site.

Take a look at some of the "projects & builds" to get an idea about what some of the other guys are doing. There are all levels of projects there and some pretty damn good pieces being put together.
Personally, I'd write down a statement of intent on what you'd like to end up with rather than a total restoration. Short flair sides were probably the most common of our trucks because they were the cheapest and were intended to "work".
No matter what you do, unless its a pure restoration, you're going to want to add disk brakes and a 3-point safety harness minimum so you've all ready ended the restoration thing.
Think about what you think is cool and make it yours.
And ask questions on anything you don't understand.
The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

Check out my build in Projects and Builds 1964 Custom cab shortbox restore. To me a shortbox with a 292 and a 4 speed would be rare. I don't know any of the production numbers and don't even know for sure if the 292 was an option in 62 but most everything that I have seen since I have owned this truck (1978) are long boxes with a 6 banger and a 3 on the tree. The ones I have seen with 292's in them had 3 on the trees. But wheteher rare or not build it like you want to. My original intent was to go all stock on everything, just like it came from the factory. Then I decided to dress the motor up some and did. I still have all the stock motor parts and could make it stock appearing anytime I wanted to. The outside and in the cab will be as it came with the exception of the 2 tone dash. For some unknown reason the dash was not 2 toned even though it came with the white door inserts and the map pockets from the factory. So I decided the 2 tone dash will look better with the white door inserts and chose to have it painted the way it should have came(I think the factory made a mistake?). It is yours do it as you like.
