Today I had a half day at work so on my way home I stopped by a place I found that does media blasting. Talked to the owner and he would do the truck bed for about 400-600 depending on how much media he had to use. Since I am replacing the floor, he said on the lower number. The plan will be once I finally do the welding, to haul it there. He uses a glass bead product as he does this for boats too.

I assembled the tie rod and front hubs on the axle.
Image

And put some purple power on my old rims. There was so much gunk on the one wheel that I really wonder what the heck happened!

Image

Image

Now they are clean, I will take a wire wheel to the rim and knock out the old rust and just spray them with something to keep the rust from rolling down my new rattle can job on the axle and hubs.

Yesterday I had the day off work for a sinus surgery. They took these balloon things and inflated inside my sinuses to break all the bones in there and allow the tissue to open further. I have had sinus issues for going on 6 years since the last surgery. This one was worse then the first, but this one was quicker. I can't take pain meds as I m allergic to a lot of narcotics. So I am miserable today.

Anyway- I ordered a Monstaliner kit for my 2013 F150 to remove the plastic bed liner and roll in the pyroclastic color bed material. I went to buy MEK at the home store and went to get gas, found out my bank account was drained. so I went home, dealt with the bank and went out back to piddle around with a project till I couldn't take the head ache pain anymore.

I stripped the loose rust and more dirt off the rims. I took some of the left over Eastwood Rust Encapsulator and strayed that on the rims. Here it is done.

Image

I cleaned up the back yard a little and moved some items around inside my outdoor shed. I had the hood sitting on a few blocks of wood outside since I pulled the front end. I was not okay with leaving this outside all winter, so I moved it into the shed.
Image

I also needed to find a place to put that plastic bedliner out of my '13 F150. I put it on the back frame of my '63, and put a wooden pallet inside it. I put a tarp over it and strapped it to the frame. I put an add on craigslist to sell the liner, so I don't need that flying around the neighborhood during a wind storm that frequent our area.

Image

Until I get my bank account squared away- no new parts. I wanted to buy some body panels for the cab... Floor pans, rocker panel pieces and steps. Just to get them and have on the ready till I am ready for that part. Can never have too many pieces. Engine is being disassembled more tomorrow. More pictures to come. Now its time to catch up on youtube.

Did the purple power make that paint come off ?
Didn't relize it was that powerful

I love the mini-barn storage shed. Wish mine had a better roof though- it leaks.
My garage is a "mini- barn" as well and is by far the best thing about this property. It is two stories tall, plenty of storage. However, I am too weak to take the hood to the upstairs of the garage on the homemade ladder assembly they have rigged (its sturdy but I am not always) and I don't have anyone to help me here. I thought putting it in the yard barn is the best move for now to keep the horrible rust away.

I would like to get some of the plastic stuff we cover boats with and shrink wrap the cab. But I foresee some more disassembly soon :).

Since I did the front wheels, I just HAD to do the rear. Yes the purple power takes paint off, but on the flaky paint it seemed. It did a good job of getting the dirt and junk off but it still takes scrubbing.
Remember these are not the wheels and tires I am going to run on this truck when I get it road worthy. These are the yard shoes. But no one likes filthy rusty dirty yard shoes.... Its like walking around in with dog poop in the tread of your shoes.

Image

I put the front wheels back on, and then looked at the whole truck and was like "F- it! Time to put the jack stands on the back again". and jacked it up. Off the rears came, scrubbed, wire wheeled and scrubbed again. Tape up and spray.

Not the best picture, because it started to sprinkle ice at me. I retreated inside to the pup and warms socks.

decided to start tearing down the orange 223 in prep for the machinist.

Image

barely anything built up- even the gasket was clean.

Image

But ran into a problem with a piston rod cap bolt being stripped. Will deal with that tomorrow. The overall condition of the engine will be told by the machinist but dang it looks clean right now.

Finished stripping the engine to the block this morning. I cut the stripped piston cap/nut off and moved on. I kind of buggered up the piston cap a tiny bit doing it- but it's okay.

Image

Image

Found a few weird issues like this one... I pulled the crank bolt to pull the pulley and found that one of the threads on the bolt was missing. I looked inside the crank to find a chunk of metal debris. It wasn't even debris from the bolt, but something else- it looked plastic when I got the needle nose pliers out to grab it. I put it in the youtube video I did on this engine dissection.

Next stop- load the engine into my truck this week and drop it off at the machine shop. The engine looks dang good for what I got off craigslist! Im not feeling bad about spending $200.00 on it. Will see what the machine shop has to say about the actual condition. That will determine if I sell or use the blue engine that was in my truck. I'm going to leave it on the engine stand until I get confirmation of how the orange one is.

I'm picking up a recruit company in less than a week. If all goes well with that company- I was told I will be picking up a supervisor job at work where I get weekends off, and don't run recruit company like I have been the last year and a half. It is a great opportunity. Apparently some of my supervisors like that I am not a hothead and can do my job without issue. Hope it works!

Looking great. Wish I worked as fast as you do!

For information. All that gunk inside the wheel was rearend grease. Usually caused by a rear seal going out and filling the brake drum and slinging it all over the inside of the wheel. If you see it again, look for wheel seals.

Model builders are big on Purple Power to strip enamels from plastic. Works great. will also eat aluminum in a heartbeat so be careful with it.

Keep up the good work!

The ornament has the tree in the bed. Dark in my house when I took photo.

This company is really challenging. It's tough to get them to move fast or get loud or do as instructed. I got to work at 0500 and whooped butt till I left at 1645. I went Christmas shopping real quick and home. Not even eating dinner just hitting rack quick! I gotta be in at 0500 again. I can't get enough water down I'm so dehydrated. Been yelling way more this time then ever before. Tough tough tough!im exhausted!

Do you ever throw a whole company back like a too small fish? There's got to be some people out there who still get it, want a job and are willing to obey orders and work.

I have survived to the end of week 04 with my company. We had to "be nice" and not whoop their butts christmas eve. The recruits got stockings from the "spouses club" here and the Master Chief Petty Officer of the CG came to talk with them. I had duty Christmas eve, and it was a quiet night but I don't sleep well when I am there. Too many young'ns with no idea what to do in an emergency. So I sleep awful as I am waking up ever few minutes.

Christmas morning was an easy day as I was required to be nice again. They got to go off base for an adopt recruit type program where they get fed and can relax at peoples homes in the community. I went home to take a nap with the pup and then went back to work to check the kids back in and put them to bed.

Today is my first day off and I am just hoping to get some work done. Its 65 degrees outside.

Got this from my Secret Santa (older sister) for Christmas. Now I just need to remember to pack my lunch

Got to talk to the machine shop today about my engine. He wants to bore it over 30, and replace all the valve guides/seats. Said the block was in decent shape but needed boring. The crank was in good shape and only had a couple nicks that will polish out. The head was in good shape too- but the exhaust valves were bad. It had never been bored over before, so I am going to have him work on it.

I need to find a camshaft.... I saw a couple a few weeks ago and thought- no one is gonna need those right away and i let it sit and lost them... dang..

The search begins again.

i might have paid way too much, but i just spent $800 with shipping on a complete engine rebuild kit to include oversized pistons, rings, camshaft, all bearings, timing, felpro gaskets.

I got it from Northern Auto parts. We shall see in a few days if they really had all that stuff in the kit or am I getting smoke blown at me.

work is consuming my life! its my day off (week 6 of 8 now) and I woke up worrying about how today was going to go for my recruits- i have a few space cadets who need more time in training, but i just worried that maybe we didn't do enough. i just got word they are packing up and moving to a junior company and will repeat week 5. one will be evaluated Wednesday for discharge. I have been working close to 15 hours per 6 days a week since the beginning. They are starting to come together, but its tough.
Here is a picture someone drew of me.... This was a test- I need a couple recruits who can draw to do the paintings and the t-shirt design... this recruit must have seen me staring into the classroom multiple days making sure no one was picking their nose- or their neighbors nose....

Here is another one of rough seas.... when they don't store their dirty laundry correct or they try to hide stuff under pillows or mattresses... rough seas.... :)
Mattresses weigh about 47 pounds a piece... I tossed about 65 of them- by myself.... There is a technique to it.

Flurries possible today- as it is arctic cold outside now. The past month it has been unseasonably warm so i have no room to complain. my landlord put the new insulation under the house last week too- so it is nice and toasty in here. Better then last year!

Sounds like CG boot camp is a bit more friendly than the Navy. I spent Christmas in boot camp back in 1986 in San Diego. No stockings from the spouse's club, no visit from the MCON, and no "adopt-a-recruit" in town. They DID serve a turkey dinner at the mess hall, but, well, they made it at the mess hall. Not quite like mom's Christmas dinner!

Apparently we never pissed off our Company Commanders. We never experienced "rough seas" in boot camp.

The kit came in from Northern Autocrats.
I dropped pieces of it off to the machine shop. The only thing I noticed it doesn't come with are piston con rods. Im not sure if I can reuse mine, so the machinist is going to look at mine and see what can be done.

Connecting rods are not normally included in an engine kit. I've usually just had mine re-conditioned. They take a small slice off the caps mating surface and re-bore the rod and cap together. That way you take care of any out-of-round condition at the point that takes the most stress.
