Im planning on a 351W with a Tremec TKO or a 3550 (have one in my 65 mustang, hence the 65TremecGT name) for my shorty. Hey Garbz, could you recommend a bell housing for me, I plan on using a centerforce dual friction clutch and the mechanincal linkage modified from my original clutch settup. Seems like I will need a aftermarket bell and they seem to be about $400.

Thanks for the info.

My only concern is the location of the shifter since i know the T-5 shifter is farther back than my OE 4 speed. Anyone done the conversion ???

I used the adapter plate setup from John Mummert when I put a T5 in mine, was about as close to a bolt up as you will get. The shift lever comes up about 1/3 to 1 inch in front of the seat bottom and you cant shift it into 2, 4, or Rev. I made a piece to offset the upper lever about 3 inches in front of the lower lever to allow shifting into the rear positions. When covered with a boot, it looks OK and operates very well.

I have been looking at the Tremec TKO since it has multiple shifter locations. Also looking to get the quick time bell, since no addapter would be needed and it would be that much closer to the engine, moving the shifter a little forward.

My dads 65 shorty is engineless right now and have been doing some measuring. Looks like the T-5 shifter is just as fmartin stated, a little to far back. I figure with the mid or forward TKO shifter locations we should be ok, problem being they are backordered on the forward shifter and TKO's are expensive! I have a tremec 3550 in my 65 mustang that I might pull and run in my truck since Im thinking of selling the stang and I have its original 4spd still.

Hey Garbz, did you ever get a chance to price a TKO out for me, Im still interested if you have a chance.

5 speed in '62 y-block F100 4X4?

Post by montego69 »

Have any of you guys swapped out an original 4 speed and replaced it with a 5 speed in your y-block slicks?

madmaxetc has done this with his 67. same basic cab dimensions as the slicks and yes it is right in front of the seat. he custom bent a shifter for his and he says it works good. i know it looks good. i saw it at the swap meet last weekend. maybe he will chime in here.

If you replace the tailshaft housing on a T-5 to one from a S-10 T-5 it moves the shifter forward. Get a very short throw performance shifter (B&M Pro Ripper for example) and you can adapt your stock shifter arm and still have a reasonable sized pattern.

Montego-- look at my album. It's a standard mustang T5 froma 95 GT. I'm currently having problems with the clutch linkage, so I am in the process of putting together a hydrualic clutch set up. As far as shifter location goes, just bend the shifter around the seat-- works just fine.

Unibodyboy,
so seeings as you are using a 95 T-5 you used Mummerts adaptor plate instead of having your bellhousing modded?

Greg-- right you are. If your truck is lowered, you may have some problems with a one piece drive shaft, I had to modify my crossmember by taking out the mountint plate for the center bearing support. If you stay with the two piece driveshaft, you will also have to shorten the front driveshaft and have it modified accordingly for the transmisssion output of choice.

It is definitely the best thing i've done to my truck to date, it makes it so much more driveable.

Check over at Fordification. There is at least one tech article about installing a NV4500 5 speed in a later model truck which is basically the same as a slick. Its pricey and may be over kill for your application though.

great pictures...

unibodyboy,

great pictures. did i read that your trans has the S10 tailshaft?
can you measure the overall length? I need to fit it into the space between the bellhousing and the transfer case. i have a short driveshaft with a slip joint in the middle that bolts both to the trans and the transfer case. i need to figure out how much will need to come out and if i can preserve that slip joint yet. boy, it sure would be easier if it was a 2WD! haha.
does anyone know if ford supplied a 5 speed trans with the shifter on the top/middle similar to the original 4 speed in my '62?

unibodyboy,
Never thought to look at your album - NICE TRUCK!!!

As I understand it Mummerts adaptor works just the same with a 94-95 V6 T-5 also? Those 2 years the V6 tranny should be strong enough for a Y block, higher torque rating than the 85-93 V6 T-5 (which would require the bellhousing mod anyway). I would like to get this conversion done when I set the 292 in the truck. I can come up with the V6 tranny from the "pullurown". A GT one will be alot harder to find.
I actually installed a carrier bearing & 2 piece driveshaft in my Uni, I should keep it then?
