Vintage/Classic Car/Truck Insurance

Post by Gritsngumbo »

Following a lead by one of our Old Car Club members I have been checking into Vintage/Classic Insurance for my Slicks. Vehicles can't be used as daily drivers, only for occasional use, such as weekend drives, shows, parades, touring, etc. so that wouldn't apply to many of our members, but it's dirt cheap, compared to conventional insurance. Less than $100 per year for each of my trucks compared to almost $700. Hagarty and Grundy are two that I've looked at so far. My hold up is that you're required to have an enclosed/lockable garage in which to keep them and I don't (yet!).

Strange...we have my wife's 69 firebird insured with Grundy for 17,500 worth of coverage and our premium is like 260.00 yearly for full coverage.

Anything 25 years old or more qualifies for calssic insurance with State Farm, drive it as much as you want. They quoted me less than $200 per year on my Uni.

I dunno? That's just what the quote came up. I haven't bought yet? Mine would be only in the $10,000 to 12,000 range. Maybe that's the difference? Also the liability coverage level can change the rate.

I had Hagerty for a while but switched to Grundy because they would also cover my 87 TBird TC. The rates were about the same IIRC. Seems like I pay $75 per year for $5K agreed value. But Grundy has a minimum $10K value for pickups. Or so they told me.

I never filed a claim with Hagerty, but I did with Grundy. They reimbursed me for the towing on the F100 when it didn't quite make it home the day I bought it. No hassles and I got the check in less than a week.

I'm a fan.

If you intend to register the truck as a vintage/historical vehicle, get a formal appraisal first, then shop around your local insurance companies. The company I have my regular vehicles with was not very interested in insuring vintage vehicles and in fact were $800 more than a local guy. I got full coverage for $146 a year. Hagerty wants you to submit photos of your garage and will gripe about things like rakes and bikes hanging on the wall.

I must say that I didnt really shop around other than being blown off by Grundy and Hagerty. They didnt seem to want to be bothered and gave me ridiculous price with crazy rules.
I checked with my regular Allstate girl and got "Specialty Vehicle Insurance" I set the value and they give a price. SIMPLE. There was a mileage limit but I have forgotten it since I will never come close anyway.

Lots of good info. The garage is a hangup for me. I'm building a 24X24 carport which is behind a 6' fence and a big dog so that should keep 'em safe. It was my understanding that Allstate also required an appraisal?

When I bought my Dentside last year, I knew I wouldn't be driving it much...and I don't. Like maybe twice a month. So there was no way I was paying full boogie insurance, if I didn't have to.
After a bit of shopping, I ended up with http://www.americancollectors.com/ $48 a year, for basic collision insurance. :thumright:

They require the vehicle to be worth $3,000 and to be stored in a locked garage.
Well, my truck magically became worth 3 grand  and yes, I own a locked garage (even though the truck is never in there). So I fibbed a little...this is an insurance (i.e. legalized extortion) company we're talking about here, I don't feel bad about fibbing about my truck's value, or the fact that it sits in the driveway in FRONT of the locked garage.

They also require you send in one pic of the vehicle, so I polished it up real good & drove to a scenic spot near my house & told my truck to say "cheese"! It worked & I have cheap insurance, so there. neener.gif
My "Slickitis" affliction began here...

I don't have a problem stretching the truth with an insurance company, but I don't want to give them any excuse to deny a claim, so I would be careful in that regard.

I've not come across a case where an appraisal is required when adding the vehicle. Now, if you want to raise your coverage to a significantly higher value than you had prior (post restoration) or more than the average vehicle of the type, then yes, they sometimes will request it.

Getting appraisals is a quagmire and a bone of contention with me. Most of the 'appraisers' out there are happy to take your money and tell you what you'd like to hear, not necessarily do a realistic valuation on your vehicle.

Also, rate differences between all of us will exist depending on where you live among other factors.

I had Hagerty back in CA when my 65 was stolen and never recovered. 45 days later I had a check in hand for 17K (agreed value) no questions asked. I did have to prove that I owned another vehicle as a daily driver though. Once my 63 uni is road worthy I will be insuring it with them again. VERY satisfied
