Gas tank relocation

The other day i was at the junk yard and parked sideways on a slight incline, when i came back about $3 worth of gas had leaked out and mesed up the paint. Fortunatly i already had plans to repaint the truck but decide i should fix the problem before i do get it painted. I heard some people on here have used a mustang tank under the bed. How did it go, How easy is it to do, any major problems? Does anyone have drawing of the bracketry required? How about a Bronco 2 tank?

I was doing some research and realized that i have dual exaust going out the back and i wont be able to put a 22 gallon mustang tank in it

How about a bronco 2 tank? how wide is it? How tall"

The bronco II and mustang tanks are roughly the same size and depth. The big difference is in the location of the filler.

I agree about the gas leak issue. A long story short is that I was once fined $2500.00 (yes the decimal is in the right place) for placing a hazardus material on the highway when my tank expanded in the heat. This was after an attendent (we cant fill our own tanks in Oregon) filled it too full. I am having a tank built for my truck and in the meantime I will be putting a 12 gallon tank from a Toyota in the tool box in the bed ,seems to fit real well. The tank in the cab is on the way out. There are some early Chevy (sorry) tanks that can fit under the slicks but they are only about 15 gallons and I was wanting (always seem to want things that cost money) something with about 25.

Who can afford 10 gallons of gas at $4.00 a gallon? If I take the trailer and go camping I dont want to stop every town to fill up. Then again if the price keeps going up I will be camping in the driveway.

Here is what I used. A 49-52 Ch*&% car gas tank. Fits between the frame rails perfect. Can still use my hidden hitch and the filler is to the side instead of on the top. The tank comes from Tanks Inc. an includes everything but the sending unit. It also gives you the option of carburetor or FI

It is 16 gallon and is only 7.5" tall so it doesn't hang down so far. The filler fits nicely through the opening between the frame rail and the bed floor.

For the gas door I chose a late model Aerostar because the gas door locks and is cable operated from the cab. In my case I plan on using a trunk popper solenoid hidden behind the rear tailight.

This was just my best option. I would be glad to share details with anyone interested. I do have a new Bronco II tank I was going to use but on my particular build it hung down too far. Make someone a deal on it!

if i was to use the Ch*&% gas tank it would only clear the exaust about 1/2 inch...... Mamby i could drop the pipe down a little by adding some pipe where the exaust goes over the axle........... did you mount it flush with the type of the frame rail? what kind of braketry did you make to mount it??

*edit* I think i would go for the 16 gallon mustang tank because the filler neck would come through the bed and it is only 1/2 an inch deeper.... how close is too close for the exaust to be next to the tank? I would still need to drop the exaust down a bit. Has anyone used Skips artical to install one of these tanks? do you know about how much it would hang down when it is all said and done??

Thanks for all the comments on my tank install. I chose this because I dont want to have to fill gas in my bed. The aerostar door or any door for that matter gives it a custom look. For those who asked here is a link to the tank.

My install is between the frame rails and the top extends above the frame. I made an upper cradle for the tank and it is actually about a half inch below the bed braces which left enough room to get the filler hose between the bed floor and frame. It looks like I may cut 6"s off an old drive shaft and weld through the frame to run the filler. I will get some better pics with the tank out this weekend and post.

yeah, that's my thing about the filler in the bed floor, what if you actually wanna use the truck as a truck...

I would be screwed on frequent occasion... I dont wanna unload the whole truck when I'm taking crap home from school and fill up 2-3 times...

or what if you got a load of dirt... and if a bunch of it gets into the filler hole, maybe into the tank... no thanks...

I wish there was a real good option for a flareside. I dont really wanna put a filler door in the fender, although they look pretty slick. I got a Torino tank some years back, figured I would put the filler behind the plate, but it would probably be too low to fill right, slosh gas out, etc... pisser. I dont know what to do... I hate the cab tank...

Hi guy's , new to site, I've been looking into moving my tank and this set-up looks good to me. don't like the mustang because of filler through the floor . My question is what did you use for sending unit? is it available through the same vendor?
