Steering wheel quiz.

Post by jwh f-100 »

Spotted this pic and borrowed from lincolnslick, hope it's OK. I have been watching for a pic of one to quiz everyone on..
Image

What had this wheel???? My '79 dent side had one but was installed by the PO. I think he got it from a Granada???? I think I have also seen them in trucks, maybe a ranger or a custom??????? They were a 3 spoke with a brushed aluminum finish with padded black vinyl. Only from memory but it seems like the center had or appeared to have allen screws holding the center on. Would like to find one for the slick. Maybe I should go with a larger but similar aftermarket wheel to help with the "strong arm" steering.

Jason: I believe LMC has the steering wheel(or one very similar) you're looking for on Page 67 of their catalog. Only 15" but it comes in Black foam or wood

Can't tell from that pic, is it 2 or 3 spoke? My 1981 Mustang had a 3 spoke of that same style. I think I've seen them in Slicks, but may have been on a tilt column.

My 79 Mustang and Capri both had very similar ones, but I believe this is what's in Lincolnslick's

Grits, Couldn't find it.

Thanks JC I'll be watching that. With the info I found at fordification I can't be 100% sure it will fit. If the price is right I take a chance.
Steering wheel fit:
Source1: the spline count and taper is the same on Ford columns from the 50's to the 90's so wheels will interchange just fine.
Source2: the '73-'78 steering wheel will not fit '79 column. Different spline at hub to shaft fit. 79's take '79 & later (the smaller wheels of 80's & 90's), while '78s take '78-earlier (back into 40's)

"Grits, Couldn't find it."

Jason: I was looking at an old print catalog (summer 07). They moved it to page 75.

That wheel came on lots of Fords & Mercury's in the mid to late 70's
Mustang II
Fairmont's
Granada's
Trucks
Zephyrs
Monarchs
Capri's

The thing to watch for is that it has the horn rings on it.
Some of the cars had turn signal stalk horns.

I think that is the "sport" steering wheel. Seems like there is something about that wheel on fordification. I think it was an option from the mid '70's up. and like others have said, probably came on other Fords & Mercurys as well.

Those wheels bring pretty good money on ebay. They used those in alot of lates 70's Fords, including Mustangs and trucks. One thing about them, no big deal, but the ones out of the late 70's cars do not have horn provisions, as the horns on the cars were activated by pressing in on the turn signal lever. The truck wheels have the horn provision. You can always wire up a horn button elsewhere though.
