Need help

Post by Xian »

How do I get this fan clutch off? I cant figure it out. The fan unbolts from the back but there are no visible bolts, clips or places to put any type of tool. I am trying to learn to do the work on my own to save money. Any help would be welcome. The truck is out of commission until I get this off. The alternator/ waterpump pulley has sheared and needs to be replaced.

Thanx

I would look behind the fan, is there 4 bolts going into the pulley. Take those out and remove the fan. If you need to seperate the fan and clutch the bolts should be on the back.

Got the 4 bolts out and the fan is loose but the clutch is still attached to the shaft.

Possibly totally irrelevent information follows:

On my BMW, on the backside of the clutch the shaft has two 'flat' portions where you can put a wrench or Channelocks to hold the shaft. IIRC, all it takes is a good smack and it will break loose and unthread. I have no idea if yours is the same way.

This fan is on your Slick, right?
It sounds like you've loosened the bolts holding the fan to the clutch...you need to unscrew the bolts holding the clutch to the water pump, then it will all come off in your hand.

This is basically what the clutch should look like from the back side...other than the dripping oil.

Front side. Fan bolts to the clutch, then you bolt the fan & clutch combo to the water pump.

Be careful you don't poke a hole in your radiator trying to get it off. I've starting putting a piece of heavy corrugated cardboard on the backside of the radiator when removing fans, alternators, etc.

The fan was bolted to the back of the clutch and the waterpump bolts hit the clutch when I back them out but wont come out all the way so the clutch traps the fan, waterpump bolts and the pully. I also see no visable bolts or flat spots to put a tool. also you can hold the pump pully and spin the clutch sepratly. I am very close to getting out the sawsall and cutting it off. thanks for all the info I am sure it can be figured out. I will take more pictures this weekend.

The clutch is probably rusted to the water pump shaft. The pump shaft sits up inside the clutch shaft to give it stability while spinning.
Grab the clutch on either side, and wiggle it left to right.
Pull the right side a bit to the front, then pull the left.
It will work itself right off that way.

BE SURE to first put a piece of cardbopard behind the radiator like dotcentral said!

I agree with Banjo's theory. I've had that happen a few times, should pop off pretty easily with a couple good whacks.
