Rear fuel tank installed (pic warning)

Post by jecsd1 »

Tonight I got the fuel tank hung behind the rear axle. Thanks to everyone with parts recomendations. I cut out and flipped the rear Xmember like Iceman suggested. It will really protect the tank in the event of an impact plus it made mounting the tank level much easier.

It's a replacement tank for a 48-52 Chev sedan. I know...but the dimensions were PERFECT. All I need to do now is pad the straps and run the filler line. I will be able to fill through the bedside and not worry about filling in the bed.

Just thougth I'd share.

The tank is a 16 gallon, at least thats what ChopperMike told me. The only issue I have left is how to run the filler pipe. I can either run it up and over the frame rail so it will be between the frame and bed (tight fit) or I can cut an approx 2" hole in the side of the frame rail for the tube to travel through. It's after the rear spring hanger so it's not in a high stress area. I will probably do that because it will allow me more freedom with filler location.

Oh I forgot I also got a pop open filler door from Tanks inc. i didn't take a pic but it's a nice unit. Should look real clean when done.

Can you post a picture of the filler door or maybe a link to it? I need to get one and I love to see that option. It might be easier than what I am planing. thanks

I too was eyeing up that tank.

You did a nice install!

Can you measure how wide the flat area is on the top of the tank? I would like to put a "factory" fuel inj. pump in the top and it looks like it may work REAL nice.

Thanx, Tim

That looks great! I am more inspired than ever to get started on mine. I got a question tho.How do you do the rear tank and also rear exit exaust? Is there some kind of unwritten rule how far the pipes got to be from the tank? I just put a new set of pipes from LMC and I think I can adjust them to be 4 inches or more from the tank. If anyone has rear tank rear exaust Pics feel free to whip them out. :hm:

jecsd1 ...That is a beautimus tank job well done :rocker:

Byron,
I'm not sure where my exhaust will be but that tank only hangs about 5-6 inches below the bottom of the frame and is about 6-8 inches rearward of the axle. I think there would be enough room to run pipes. You could always run them up and over the axle and then outside the framerails. That would more than shield them from the tank

Jason: Nice job. Suggest you add a few more details (measurements etc.) and add to the "Tips and Hints" Forum. Again nice job.

Looks good!
Get some adhesive backed rubber to put on the straps. It'll prevent metal to metal contact and may help keep things quieter.

If you go on the site this tank was bought, you will see they sell an in tank fuel pump for that tank. If you find something else that will work but for less bones I sure would like to know about it. Im going injected to.

Turned out nice! See, it is OK to use some Chevy parts, but just not others. I'm confused, but glad it worked for you!

It's ironic to me because I think these trucks should be left as built and if updates are wanted one should buy a newwer truck.

This is my second post here, I think my other one may have gotten deleted.

Well. I am all about what parts are the best for my application. I try not to get hung up on what number a supplier assigns to my parts
