lincoln 460
Not trying to say anything outta place but I gotta spare set of 68 460 heads outta a lincoln continental, which are 4v & the matching intake to go with it if anyone's interested. It'd open up that 77 alot.

it supposedly has less than 80k on it.

The negative thoughts might be from alot older Lincoln 460. It's a diffrent engine. MEL
The engine in the picture is a Ford 460. I would at the least change the timing set. I would have suggested headers, but FordBoyPete knows his shit.
I have used the L&L Mounts. I could not find 460 mounts from a 73 to 78 truck. 400 bucks for a good motor and transmission seems like a deal to me. Good advice about moving the oil drain plug.

I paid 300 for my 74 MkVII 460. The longer C6 was a pain and I ended up tossing it and getting a Torino C6 (13.5" tailshaft VS the 17" Lincoln with funky mount)
$400 seems too high to me. Mine was complete as well.
BYR has touched on every point you need to know about that engine and is dead on with his insights on rebuilding and buying

That's the first time I've seen a Chevy orange 460.
These guy have covered pretty much all the bases, so I won't add anything.
That intake looks aluminum from here...that might be a good sign of things to come.

I Have a 472 CI EFI vesion of the 385 in "Christine" and it will be transferred over to the crew cab. Great engine and pretty stout.

it makes me feel a little bit better about this being the same as a ford 460 then.

It is suprising that headers alone would give you a 20% HP increase.
Also intersting that a stock 429 from the early 70's was rated at something like 340HP. Is that rating flywheel or rear wheel?
Is the diffrence heads and compression?

Flywheel, ALL 460's after 71 were dogs in stock form. (except the 74 PI)Jonas wrote:It is suprising that headers alone would give you a 20% HP increase.

and other year PI's which actually ran very well.
I have a 69 460 rated at 360hp and 500lb ft. After 1971 the ratings were net (which I remember to be back of transmission with power accessories) The 72 & Up were usually around 200hp rated. Remember the 74 Cop Car to be 275hp. Still have that engine floating around here somewhere... lol
A rear wheel hp using a C-6 trans would be approx 125hp less than flywheel. Using a 4spd around 100hp less.
Todays transmissions and powertrains take up a lot less HP.
Spent many a hour on both engine dyno and chassis dyno just to see what the old fords would do. That was my experience.
(would be other losses too as the engine dyno figures would be normally open header an closed exhaust on chassis dyno.) From what I found going open header to a good system with mufflers usually around 15hp. Again depending on HP level....
Found the 429/460 engines seemed to like larger header sizes than a comparable FE would.

Its not me who said '77 460 pistons will not support headers... LOLGarbz wrote:Wow the next Hawkrod, No offense Hawk...Please go over to the 460.com forum and argue there... Here we just want to be pleasant and create no friction.

What did he try to do bolt the headers to the pistons?
Put a Cork in it Garbz, then the backpressure will help your shcitz

One thing on backpressure. I put a catback Gibson on my 5.4 F150 and it lost seat of the pants acceleration. Once I added the programmer and Airaid CAI I regained what I lost plus a good bit more. I have no numbers to back any of it up other than the ass dyno, and I can run of and hide from stock 5.4s now, but with just the exhaust, gutless.
