Alan, Knowone makes a direct kit as far as I know. BUT Vintage AIR can be converted to use and they work well. ALso another similar company out there but mind is blank on the name...
The two that come to mind are Vintage Air and Classic Auto Air. One of them have a replacement and the other has a universal one that would fit.

There are others out there also that make the retro underdash model, Lyman sent this to me after Slick Stock.

I also heard its cooler in the Queensland area, and a little wet.

The prices look good in the lucky site, but for a smooth, custom-fit, original looking install I plan to use the Classic Auto Air "Perfect Fit" unit. Pricey at $1200 but looks like a factory install (No, not the original hang-on type)

I have the classic auto air kit. About the only thing I didn't have to modify was the actual unit inside. I have to get some pictures up soon. I had to have all my own hoses made, everything they sent me was completely wrong. Worst part was, they didn't even know the stuff was wrong nor could I explain to them exactly what I needed.
However, the brackets and sanden compressor were sweet and fit perfectly.
I blocked off my fresh air vents and also moved their control unit about 4-5 inches back and cut 3 inches off the box to do so because it looked like a sore thumb where it was.
It does blow cold, but it was a lot of work and tons of $.

Unibodyboy: Did what you sent you match what was shown in the instructions? Seemed to be a slam dunk install (not easy by any means, but something most anyone could do).

well I'm going for the vintage look and picked this up locally although they are also on E-Bay. have also aquired a compressor but will probably take the other components off of the Maverick in the end. might have to yard the brackets to fit the 300-6 since the Mav is a 250-6....Anthony . I am interested in putting air in a '66 also. So, back to Alan's question. Has anyone installed a decent AC system in a Slick? Any pictures?
I am not afraid to spend some dollars if it saves a bunch of headaches.
I am opposed to buying "complete, well thought out and engineered" kits that aren't.
Have to say that I was not inpressed with what I saw from Vintage or Classic. Just my opinion.
I seem to remenber a thread a few months back about modifying a van evaporator unit to fit a Slick. Any updates on that project?

My parts truck has a Mark IV, not sure how common they were, but they repop the evaporators for the early mustangs and from what I've heard some of the dealers put those ones in the trucks back in the day.

I wonder if it would be possible to find an evaporator unit that would fit in place (with some modifications no doubt) of the current heater coils in a "fresh air" unit.....
With some fabbing, one could move the heater coils to the left (towards the passenger sidewall, and drop the evaporator into the series.
This would probably not result in an ice cold vehicle, but it might take the edge off, and it would keep the defrost and heat functional.
Just thinking out loud. I wonder if there is a place that would sell just the "guts", evap, condensor, pump, switching etc.....

Alan,
I have a Vintage Air mini-space saver in my 29 Model "A" and am putting the same unit in my 63 Slick. The unit will tuck up under the dash and can't hardly be seen, but you will lose part of the glovebox and the radio will probably hit the unit. I filled the dash smooth so it didn't matter to me.
The one in my model "A" will get plenty cold in the summer here in Phoenix. I originally had it set up with R134A and it didn't work very well, then I had it recharged with Freeze12(not R12) and it works awesome. The Freeze12 is a little bit more costly than R134A but not nearly expensive as R12.

If the hoses has been for the correct vehicle/engine then yes it would be a fairly easy installation. I will be honest though, I have found that there aren't many true bolt up and forget about it type upgrades for our trucks.
In regards to cool, this thing will make you want to wear a blanket in the summer-- no joke. I do however have probably 200 sq ft of dyna mat in the truck, plus a full interior.
Had to do something, that back window without a/c can get awfully hot in the sun.
Garbz may be able to shed some light. If I recall correctly, Steve was a vintage air dealer and they really liked those units. Could be very mistaken though.

Thanks John! I`ll ask Johnno what he thinks, but some of the stuff he thinks is strange to say the least!
, it would be cool to put new tech air into old under dash units!. the big problem as always is, everything is built for left hand drive cars, but hey !, we survived after the pommies dumped us down here!

Anthony, that does look the ants pants!, but only in a left hand drive truck, the steering column and the peddles will be in the way of the unit!, unless you can turn the unit around some how!
