Door Upholstery

Post by Casey 65 »

Did you guys note the photo of the truck door Upholstery in the "Saw this truck @ Ford world headquarters a few years ago" topic? It has no screws holding it on and has a nice finished look. It appears the lower panel is also done in the same manner.

They may have used a panel retainer like this one.
Image

Cut a peice of thin paneling.
Drill holes through panel and door or lower door panel.
Install retainers through wood panel.
Install padding and cover on panel with staples on rear side.
Install padded panel on door.

You may also be able to put a staple through the back side of the plastic retainer to help hold it into place...

There are also metal type retainers but I'm not sure of the proper name and couldn't find a pic.

These are held on by automotive Velcro called Duolok Tape. GM and others uses this to hold on bumper covers.

Both are good ideas. I was trying to figure out how to explain the panel retainer, but couldn't remember what it was called. The Velcro method would eliminate the drilling of holes.

Velcro,
That's a good idea, I never thought of that for a panel and we use it often for hanging stuff... 3m sells it in a roll and it is strong. 3M part# - 06481..

Here is another easy way to make a nice little panel. Cut a peice of 16ga. sheet metal to shape. Cut a peice of material/covering slightly larger then the panel.. Spray the panel and back side of material with a spray adhesive. After adhesive is dry to touch apply covering to sheet metal leaving acces material around the diameter of the panel. Lay the panel face down and while pulling back on material apply "door edge guard" around the perimeter. After the edging is applied cut off access material with razor blade.

At work we did this as a "quick fix" but it actually came out looking nice.. We used black material with black door guard so not sure how other colors or chrome would look...

Wow! That's a great looking interior. Mind if I ask what that set you back?
