No matter what jack you choose Get yourself a couple jack stands also!!!!

Here is a kit at sears that includes a jack, stands, and creeper..

The Sears jacks are not industrial strength but for home use they should be fine

How many tons should the jack be? Is the only difference between steel and aluminum price and weight?

Is there anything wrong with this set up?

I have this jack. The "Speedy-Lift" is nice. The first pump puts it up to where you need it to be.

This would be good for car and truck service. They also make larger than 2 ton. I've had a Hein Werner for 30 years, had it rebuilt once.

Jake,
I have the 3 ton Sears Steel Jack you see 1st on Sears link jwh posted. I've had it more than 10 yrs
now with absolutely no problems at all. I bought it as a set. It didn't have a creeper & the Jack stands are
too narrow at the base for me to feel comfortable working under, so I got 6-ton stands @ tractor Supply.
That Sears Jack is easy to lift & tote and I have done a lot of work with it.

I'd buy that jack in a instant if i need a jack, but mine's as good as when I bought it back in the last century. . . . .

Altho' that "Low Rider" style creeper is a necessity I could use. Seems homeless people are scarfing up all the corrugated
card board around here

I mean what with the ongoing depression and all that. shrug.gif

I've been warned about buying a Craftsman due to the hydraulics not fairing well. I was told they like to leak down at inopportune times. I see FBP has had no issues but I got my guidance from some other "mechanics". I bought a 3 ton unit from Tractor Supply I think. The brand name escapes me but it works fine. Even when holding a transmission up for install. I've had lesser units leak down while performing this task.

Jacob, I have a blackhawk 2 ton service jack I bought new in 1980. Have not added a drop
of hydraulic oil in that time. It's 2 ton rating seems like the 3 ton models of today. It also
has a fairly large "cup" to contact the frame or axle-paid about 150.00 for the jack back then.

I bought that 3 ton Craftsman set about 5 yrs ago. No issues with leaks or holding pressure and it has good control for lowering. Only complaint is the handle pulls out when you're pulling it around.
I agree with prev post that bigger jackstands would be better for truck use, but these are good for the size -- solid and I like the ratchets.
