4V carb/intake for 352

The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

Hawkrod,

Regarding the dyno chart you referenced earlier, do you recall if there was much difference between the 'T' or 'S' manifolds at the less than 3500 rpm level? For some reason I wasn't able to open the dyno chart info at the link you posted. I suspect that most of the dyno differences start to show up at the upper rpm levels - over 3500 rpms. If you could & have the time, would you please try to copy and then post that dyno chart here?

In my world, my two 390/4spd'd Slicks don't see much time over 3000 rpms, as they spend most of their time from off idle to 2800 rpms with RV/towing/hauling chores. I feel my target rpm operating range is typically idle (900) to 3000 rpms, so I'm looking for my engine parts combination (namely cam, carb & intake) to operate at it's peak efficiency in that rpm range.
Thanks! BarnieTrk

The dyno charts are not available to the public at this time. The differences in power actually start at idle and ran all the way up with the peak difference in the 3500 range or so. Hawkrod

I kinda figured that......

Interesting........
Well, based on what you've said - it sounds like I'll stick with the C5- manifold on my #1 work horse and leave the 'S' manifold on my "2nd string" truck.

Thanks again, Hawkrod!

The secondaries open all the time during normal driving and even cruising. That is not to say they are constantly open but they do open as needed. Hawkrod
Thanks for all of this tech info!

I'm using an Edelbrock. While it does have the vacuum actuated flapper thingy, the secondary butterflies are mechanically actuated. I can feel the additional spring tension in the throttle linkage when the secondary butterflies start to open. It seems like the secondaries could not function until the point at which the mechanical actuation of the secondaries is reached, regardless of the load on the engine. Am I misunderstanding something there?

No, you have it correct. The Carter AFB (that is what an Edelbrock is) and a few others do have a mechanically controlled secondary even on a vacuum secomdary carb. They do that by having two sets of plates in the secondaries, one vacuum controlled and one mechanical. That would definitely be an exception to what I noted. Hawkrod

Hawkrod you have a nice grasp for explaining things. I've allways believed the 4 barrel setup is better all around in many apps. and don't actually know of anywhere a two barrel would be better. Personally, for 250$ I would just wait and buy a manifold and carb, unless your thinking 390 later. I know of one performer with carb in Booneville, Indiana for about 200. At least it was there a couple weeks ago.

Myself, I'm looking for a performer RPM for the 427. Still haven't torn it down. Waiting to go back to work so I can buy the best for it. Uncertain as to what that will be as of yet. Best doesn't neccesarily mean new.

I have seen the dyno tests that Hawk rod speaks of, believe it or not one of the best all around manifolds was one I have used since the '60's. The Edelbrock streetmaster a single plane small runner manifold. The Icemans wife had one on a mild 352 that ran pretty well.

MY Personal exp.. was that I tried the 3 deuce set up ran ok on a 390, good gas mileage,, when changed motors to the 427 stroker dthen went to 428 cast manifold better performance, but at higher Rpm's it just seemed to take forever to go past 3200.. went and at that time bought intake from Ford Power Parts in Calif. and what a difference now past 3200 with same carb. trans/rear set up it will take off past 3200 Rpm's and you can feel the 4 barrell kick in at say around 120,, if they are still doing there own intakes then I would go that route,, past exp dyno charts are ok if want to look at paper and want to collect sheets to look at ,, Real results are on the streets for everday use and thats where it should count,,,, lats time I looked several moths ago Ford Power Parts was still in business............

Lastly, the OP said his possible donor carb was from a late 70s truck. Would you bother using it? I wouldn't. I think the aftermarket alternatives would be vastly superior. Plus, oem carbs generally offer limited tuning capabilities.

Fun discussion. :D
This has been a good discussion and a lot of information. In the end I think will leave the 2V on the 352. It runs well and has not given me any grief. If I am to spend the time and effort, may as well wait till I can find better hardware. Thanks to everyone who gave me their "IMO"! :D

It has been several years since Ron went belly up at Ford Power Parts. He never got back off the ground after he moved. Hawkrod

Yeah, he had a great concept, we supplied him rare parts and he sold them and if then in theory he paid us (that was always a bit iffy! LOL). I sold parts there for over twenty years and he usually took care of me because I was one of his "good" sources. I know other guys whe were not so lucky. Hawkrod

I agree with that he always took care of us, since also we where hauling some parts back and forth from northy caroilna to his place ,, also picking up big items to save him on tuck freight,, some items from Holman/Moody shop and after the split also,, picked up some special furniture for his at that time girlfriend michell,, after the early/ mid 90's lost touch with him like he disappeared ???

He was in the same place on Carmenita until just a few yeaers ago when he had an issue with the landlord or something like that and he moved over by Knotts Berry farm. The new place was much smaller and so he quit taking consigments and that caused business to fall off and eventually about three years ago he called it quits. He now buys and sells cars and I see him every few months. He actually has given me a lot of business since he quit selling parts but nothing like the old days. I do expect to see him tommorrow. Back to the original subject. There is a used 390 performer intake in Costa Mesa for 75$ advertised on Craigslist. Phone 760-828-3303 . I would like to have it, but going for an RPM for the 427 as my next purchase. The intake may or may not still be there and it is up for grabs to anyone who can score on it.

I did not end up getting to see Ron this morning, I ended up talking with John Vermeersh and some other guys for so long I had to bail out before I saw him. I have his info around here somewhere and I will see if I can find it. I don't usually call him, he calls me or sends people to me so I don't have his card handy. Hawkrod
