what rear end is this

this is in my 64 f100 i thought it would have the 9'' is this the right rear end or has it been changed i hope the pics work im new here and have never posted

It's a Dana-check the tag, it may be a traction lock.

that is a dana 44, it is what you got in 64 if you wanted a posi rear end.

on the cover,theres a tag telling the info. also you can get the code off the door tag and look here

I have a parts truck with a Dana 44, 3.78 ratio. Will it be a posi? I never bothered to check it, I don't much like Dana's. There's one in my '67 LTD, too.

R Pope, I had a '67 Galaxie Conv. with a rear end that looked like that - it had a cover on the back anyways. I had a shop manual for it that described it as a "Light Duty" rear axle. It was not a posi. Car had a 289 2V / C4.

The axle that came from the UNI in my signature was a Dana 44 traction lock with 3.92 gear ratio. We replaced it with a 9" from a later model truck with a 3.50 ratio. The axle under the 62 UNI is an 8" with 4.10 ratio. As Ice says there were many axle's and ratios available and all would be correct if they match the ID tag.

would a 9'' out of a 65-66 be the same width and would i beenfit form swaping it i would really like to find a rear that is narrower but would swap fairly ez

I'm pretty sure a rear end from any Ford truck '72 & older will bolt in with ease.

a 9" will be a bolt in, one advantage is are there are a lot of aftermarket and used parts available compared to the 44.

I have a 64 short wide with a factory Dana 60 4:10 powerlock. Door tag indicates 4:10. Pics can be seen on my profile I believe. Or e-mail for pics.

Amazingly enough, the Galaxie rear is not a Dana like the truck. Your Galaxie and many other Fords came with a Ford design integral rear end in light duty applications. It may look like a Dana but it isn't. It is called a Ford Integral axle and the ring gear is either 8.5 or 8.7 in diameter. It is the big brother of the 7 1/4 rear used in many Mustangs, Falcons etc... Hawkrod
