61 F100 won't start?

Hey All,

Here is my status. !961 F100, 223 6 cylinder, 87,000 original miles. Drove it to and from the gas station (5 miles) about 4 months ago. Turned it off and it would not start. I have replaced everything from the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, voltage regulator, coil, condensor, points. Plus a top of the line Optima Battery! The spark from the coil is orange. I thought it was supposed to be blue.

Pulled timing chain cover. Everything was fine. Guy's I have been under the truck or hood for three days. Any suggestions. By the way. I am using a manual for a 54-55 truck 223. Is there a dfeerence with the 61 223 engine?

I had a 66 F100 with a 352 that never gave me any real issues or greif! Maybe I am just frustrated.

im sure you did this, but did not mention it in your post....
check for fuel up to carb ?

you say you pulled timing & it looked ok....
did you turn it , so it is timed correctly...didnt 'jump' a tooth ?

Orange spark....coil wired backwards? Hot to +, - to distributor.
Does sound like timing chain, recheck that the marks are right.

Are you getting gas? Have you tried putting a little in the carb?

I agree. Get a can of starting fluid and spray a couple seconds worth down the carb and see what happens.

Hey All,

Got her running yesterday. While double checking that I had the new coil hooked up correctly (Thanks R Pope). I discovered the negative wire running from the distributor to the coil was half way broken. Cuasing the weak spark. Fixed that and it fired right up!

that is why it pays to look for simple things like that before freaking out and tearing down an engine.

I agree with Iceman. I didn' tear anything down. Just removed the timing cover. However, given the trucks age. I didn't hurt to replace the things that I did.

Heading to Kuwait then Iraq. I will finish her up when I get back!
