What became of the Slick truck plants?

Post by Long63 »

The VIN on my '66 CC is the Dallas Texas plant and the '63 Uni BBW is from Kansas.

Are these plants still there? If not what is there?

the kansas city plant is still there. it's called the "claycomo final assembly plant".
i was lucky enough to take a tour when the first lightning fest was held in kansas city. it was the first, and last tour of the plant since the eighties some time.

The Dallas plant has long been closed, probably sometime in the mid to late 60's. I remember cars and trucks from the Dallas plant use to have a paper decal on the rear window that said "Made in Texas by Texans". The decal was oval in shape with the outline being a lasso and the wording inside the lasso. I just Gloogled it and found the plant closed in Feb. of 1970

My truck was built in Virginia, can't think of the city for the life of me right now. That plant closed last year, I think. I'd thought of going down and photographing the truck in front of the sign if it's still there but don't know anyone in the area.

Both my 61 uni and Sinc's '64 Slick were built in Mahwah NJ, just below the New York State line where I-287 meets the New York Sate Thruway (I-87). Ford Motor Company operated an assembly plant in Mahwah from 1955 to 1982. When it was completed, it was the largest motor vehicle assembly plant in the United States. The Mahwah town sports teams still use the name Thunderbirds in honor of the Ford plant. Bruce Springsteen's song "Johnny 99" mentions Mahwah and the Ford plant closing.

I'm usually driving pretty fast getting ready to merge onto the Thruway when I go past it now, but it looks like a Sharp plant occupies the space now. (really don't need a picture of THAT) Apparently, Edsels that were built in the Mahwah Ford plant are pretty rare nowadays, given the road salt in the northeast and the build quality of the cars...

The R code San Jose California, which is actually in the town of Milpitas (just of few miles north of San Jose) was converted to a giant shopping mall in the mid 80's.

I can confirm Ezernut's info. Kansas City plant is still cranking out F150/250's (48 per hour, I think). I worked on that line in the 70's, building bumps!

a couple of years ago the kansas city plant had the distinction of producing a truck a minute. i can't remember the monthly numbers, but that is what they calculated it out to.
