240 I6 performance

Post by nlauffer »

I am still in the planning stage with my 66. any ideas I can get will help. I have a 66 swb with a 240 and 4spd granny. I like the thought of the 6 and 4spd. Occasionally i like the thought of an AOD. With the route I want to take the truck I believe I want to increase performance with my 240.

What can be done to these motors? While still leaving it streetable.

Is a 5spd out of an F150 a good option, or is one out of a mustang better?

I have a 302 with E7 heads and a 351W to rebuild. No auto trans in my possession yet, though. V8 rumble is addictive, but the uniqueness of an I6 with split headers is awesome too.

As you might be able to tell, my mind is constantly building the truck a million different ways. I have started the paint and new seals first to give myself time to think of drivetrain.

Any and all help would (ideas) would be greatly appreciated.

Lots. All it takes is $$$. How much do you want to spend?

Both transmissions have been installed into a Slick. The decision largely depends on which engine you decide on using and available-to-you bellhousings.

Once you decide on what you want to get out of or do with your truck when you're done.

Let's start with: Which direction are you MOSTLY leaning toward?

-- a show & cruise-in truck with flash and a unique parts combo setup that will never sees a shovel of dirt or mud puddle;

-- a daily driver with good mpg & modern driveability (power disc brakes, power steering, etc.) that can haul the occasional honey-do items, lawn-care stuff, etc;

-- or a strong weekend chore truck that can tow & haul most anything. Not too worried about being pretty, comfortable or driver-friendly, more concerned with toughness, reliability and longevity.

If we knew what you were expecting to do / get out of your truck, we could provide more constructive suggestions & advice. :wink:

a clifford intake with a 2v carb and headers spice up the 240/300 nicely and you get better gas mileage.

go to the ford six preformance site above. lots or information there and just like here very friendly and helpful people. the main thing to do is increase breathing on the 240-300. pocket port at min, full porting and larger valves will increase preformance dramaticly four barrel and dual exhauste pluse mild cam will suprise you. I think you could put an aussie crossflow head on the 240 instead. intake on one side exh, on the other

Doesn't the Aussie crossflow head fit the 250 class engine?
I replaced the 240 in my 66 with a rebuilt 300 was 35.00 more on the cost. If I had it to do over again I would have rebuilt the 240 head and got a short block 300. Smaller combustion chambers in the 240 supposed to increase compression ratio.

Copper lines under intake for carburetor heat?

Really enjoyed my Clifford Conversion

My Inline 6, 240 CID would max out at 3000rpm. I had to floor it sometimes to get up a slightly steep grade, and on the way up the grade, I would lose speed little by little, almost forcing a downshift.

I switched to the Clifford water heated intake, and Clifford Ceramic Coated Headers. The Barry Grant 'Demon' 2bbl carburetor is rated at 350 CFM.

They are supposed to be good for a 45% increase in torque, 45% increase in horsepower, and an increase in fuel economy.

Now the truck revs to 4000rpm readily (obviously making a lot more power at 4000rpm than it ever did at 3000rpm), and feels, sounds and pulls like a different engine altogether. 'Seat of the pants' horsepower and torque improvements are excellent (I never did a dyno test before and after). Just the sheer driving enjoyment is a substantial improvement over stock.

I never noticed an increase in MPG, but I generally got 16-18 mpg before, but had terrible power/acceleration. So, if I got an increase in fun, an increase in power, and no increase or decrease in fuel economy, I feel like it all paid off.

Tomorrow, I pick up a Schneider Racing Cam from Schneider right here in San Diego. I ordered it Monday, with springs and lifters, and with my truck already disassembled and engine pulled, the new cam package is going in, and a Holley 390 CFM 4bbl is going on.

I believe that the switch to Holley 390 4bbl and Schneider Cam / Lifters / Springs will make this a Screamer now. It will get a new LuK clutch at the same time, and rebuild the cross-shaft bushings, fork and pushrod, so I know I am in for a wicked jump in performance.

And, I bet it will pick up 2-3 MPG..... I might just break the 20 MPG mark.

I hope you enjoy your transplant, whichever way you decide to go.

I am really looking to make a daily driver. Not too worried about fuel mileage. I am wanting to keep the 240 (with improved performance) and back it with a c6. I have a buddy that has a cast iron offy 4 barrel intake. Haven't seen it yet. I think I will use the efi exhaust manifolds. I am wanting to use a 2 barell carb. I will also use a points replacement unit and new coil for fire.
A guy I know has an engine shop in town and has said I can use whatever I need. I believe I am looking at changing cam and doing headwork. Any help on this kind of build would be great.

I have good reason to believe that the 4bbl will outperform the 2bbl in terms of power, driveability AND fuel economy.

friend of mine said more power w 4v but mileage less than 2v. hes the one i got the clifford from so i had no reason to argue.
if i had the right 4v i would probably try it out.

got the same manifold for my 223, just need to come up with headers yet.
