If all else fails, you could wire up the horn to do the same.

I'd insulate the latch base and run current to the handle for a shocking good time myself...Bet they'd ask next time.

(I'm just guessing that could be done)

I wonder is it will sound like those school class bells that we were always so fond of?

I built a low tech alarm back in the late 60's for my then new 69 Ranger. I used a jump bell from a C-130 wired into the door jam switches and a switch under the hood. Used a hidden toggle switch to arm it with and and a regular old horn relay for a holding relay. With the holding circuit once you opened a door or the hood and the alarm went off, closing it would not turn the alarm off. The only way you could turn it off was to turn the hidden switch off. Once it was turned back on it was rearmed and ready to go.

Brian, your truck is like mine! So, why did someone install this alarm system on it?

those bells are loud and ring like the old school bells.
lots of factories and other shops used them for their telephones too.

Reminds me of a story;
I was telling Darrell about a year ago I had bought CLUB for my truck. He asked; "Why"
I said; "A 5 year old could hotwire one of these trucks."
He said; "Yea, but nobody knows how to drive one anymore."

I always thought an air horn from a big truck would make a good alarm. If that wouldn't scare the crap out of them what would - well aside from a 9 mil.

A friend of mine had his friend let me hear the horn in his pickup...it was an air horn for an Amtrac train! I jumped and I knew there were no train tracks nearby.

My brother put an air horn on his motorcycle "so other drivers could hear him"
If you do run an alarm run it on a battery by it's self, so the theif does not just unhook your battery and have time to unhook the alarm and place the bell or horn in a hard to reach place and wiring in the frame so not to get cut.

I've had my car stolen before and as satisfying as the thought of poetic justice is, unfortunately boobytrapping your vehicle in that fashion would expose you to legal liability and the potential for a lawsuit.
As for the underhood bell, it should be hidden somehow and include a delay timer so that it doesn't go off until the thief leans over the fender...

people ask my why I dont change the shifter in my 65 becuase it locks up in first gear sometimes if you don't shift it correctly. If somebody who doesnt know the truck tries to drive it it will lock up almost every time, it will be alot easier to find if the thief can only go in first gear.
