Sliding taillight for fuel filler

Post by kstones63 »

Here are some pics of the sliding taillight that I built. It's finished except for mounting in the bed which should be in a couple of weeks. I need to find a fuel filler neck to put in but that should be easy. If the taillight housing gets in the way of the fuel nozzle, I will change the light from swinging sideways to folding down.
I put a spring in this to push the light out when the catch is released. I am going to put a cable on the catch and let it hang down under the fender to release it.

Great idea, Kevin!! I think you could probably sell a few of those when you get it perfected.......I could be a likely candidate! :D

Have you thought of putting a electric release on it. Like the same used on electric door locks? Still keep the cable on for power loss.
I would like to have one of those for my truck if you decide to go into production of a few.

Nice work, looks great. Question. How far does the taillight assembly "slide out"?

All I can say is there are some pretty smart guys on this site. You guys come up with some of the neatest ways of doing things.

Great work Kevin...can't wait to see it in action.

Pretty cool. I'd take one also. You going to do an operational video for us to see?

The taillight slides out 3".
I will try and remember to do a video when I get it mounted in the the bed.
I don't know if it could ever be possible to produce these, at a reasonable cost, with the equipment that I have. If a person had access to a CNC mill, it might be feasible to do. My mill is hand crank and takes forever to do anything. If I new more about the mill and how to operate it, things might be easier. I make do with what tooling that I got when I purchased the mill and not knowing its proper use.
If anybody wants to try this I would be glad to give them any measurements that I have to help them out. I just built this one as I thought about without any special plans.

I have access to several CNC's. My neighbor has a CNCMasters Baron in his garage, and I have another buddy with a machine shop in Dallas. If you already have this designed in software.... let me know and we can figure something out.

I have the gas cap and neck ready to go in. I bought a gas cap from Hagan's Street Rod Neccessities that you don't have to take off to fill the tank. It has a spring loaded center in it that the nozzle pushes into. I will take some pics and post them soon.
I don't have any exact drawings of how this is made. I woke up at 2 o'clock in the morning and thought about how to build this, then sketched it out so I wouldn't forget when I finally got up for the day. I went and bought a piece of aluminum and everything else was made out of leftover suff in the garage. It really isn't very complicated to build. Mounting it was the hard part. I will post mounting pics soon.
I am about 1 day away from having the bed ready for paint unless I find anything else that I don't like and have to fix it. Then I am waiting on the painter.

Here is the finished product other than a little bit of touch up paint on the mounts.

Now if the gas nozzle doesn't hit anything during fueling, everything will be great.
