I finally got the 429 pulled out of my '71 today.... should have been installed by now but mother nature just won't cooperate but today was pretty nice.

Anyways, I found this

I had all ready planned on replacing all the freeze plugs. Oh and the other side was the same but not as bad.
I'm sure the engine is going to need a good flushing out now.

Crap, now I'm really worried if Iceman hasn't seen anything this bad.
I should have scrapped it off but honestly, I was afraid to touch it.

Dude.
That is ugly.
I think I'd rather take a nekkid shower with Joy Behar and Rosie O'Donnell that deal with that.
Seriously, you need to pull the motor apart and have the block boiled and checked.
I'd never try to flush and run something like that.

I'm with Skip.
If you don't have the scratch for a full rebuild and the engine is in good shape you should be able to "freshen it up" by cleaning it up, honing the cylinders so the new rings will seat and going through it with a standard size rebuild kit.

Ok got a question, why is this substance bright yellow?

Just removed it with a scraper and the freeze plug appears solid, it's like this yellow substance seeped around the edges of the plug. Could this some type of sealer?

im guessing radiator stop leak, and if that is the case you will never get that stuff flushed out, you need to boil it

Yeah, it does kind of look like the stuff sold as Kopper-Kote or Copper-cote some years back. Don't know if they still sell that yuck or not.

Looks like stop leak to me. If looks okay other than leaking freeze plugs, I'd put new freeze plugs in, flush it and run it.

Talked to one of the fork lift mechanics at work, he's also an auto mechanic on the side and that's pretty much what he said.

I'm going to knock out the plugs this weekend and see how it looks on the inside.

Well got the plugs out and the back 2 were about paper thin. Guess that explains the slow seepage.
Had quite a bit of rust build up behind those 2 plugs too. Guess the PO didn't believe in anti-freeze.
I was able to flush the rust particles out with the garden hose on high pressure.

As for the yellow gunk, my buddy said it was probably a chemical reaction of the rust and antifreeze being that it was leaking so slowly.

There was no yellow gunk in the block. That's what I was worried about.

I'll install some pretty brass plugs tomorrow and try to get those 2 manifold bolts I broke out. Gosh darn it.

Ok, got the pretty new brass plugs installed.
Boy do I love going to the parts store....

Hello, may I help you?
Yes I need some 1.5 brass freeze plugs.
What year?
Pick one.....that messed her up.

What are they going in?
A 429.....messed her up again.

Computer says we don't have any.
But the store I just left said you have 10 in stock.

She leaves the counter and comes back in a few minutes with a handful of brass freeze plugs.
Hmm I said, guess your computer was wrong.

Got the 2 broke bolts out. One was broke at the head....no problem.
The other one broke off flush with the manifold....problem.
I drilled it for a EZ-out, heated it up and soaked it in PB Blaster.....wouldn't budge.
Went to the next size ez-out and snapped the tip of it off.

Got a punch to try to break the ex-out out but to no avail.....then I remembered my Dremel and I had one grinder bit for it.
That worked. Got the piece out, drilled out the bolt and retapped the hole.
She's good to go now.

Then I removed the motor mount towers, power steering box and steering column from the '71 and started removing the core support bushings but my back said enough was enough.

All in all it was a productive day.
