Hey guys, I need some help. I am finishing up building a 545 stroker for my truck. I have a built C6 ready to go for it and am informed by those who know that it would be suicidal to stick with the drum brakes and 28 spline rearend.
I bought some 1979 F250 suspension parts from the local Ford guy here in Calgary, but he now informs me that the 1979 Dana 60 rearend will be too wide.
The truck is for my wife who will use it to haul her horse trailer. The engine is being built to achieve a reasonably flat torque curve of approximately 600-650 ft lbs at 1800-3300 rpm.
I am looking for alternatives or someone in my area who has parts for sale.
Do any of you have any parts or advice for me?

The 28 spline axle will be no problem, you aren't drag racing the truck. I had a 79 with a 29 spline axles and a 429 that was bored and stroked to 528 CI. It was a super torquer and I towed my travel trailer all over the country with it and never once had an axle problem. For what you are using it for I would keep the axle that is under it and not worry about it.

I hope I always stay crazy, because I know if I ever become sane, it will drive me crazy.

The 79 just needs to have the spring pertches moved in. I think it has 2.5" width pertches and your slick would have 2" wide. So you might just need to weld on new 2" wide ones.
For the front if you want to go 250 with disks the 73-79 will work on 65-79 frames. You need the I-Beams and all the linkage.

Pull 79 250 arms and spindles and they will then be all the same width front and rear.
New 2.5" spring perches are 30 bucks for a pair.
A 28 spline is asking for trouble with that kind of torque no matter what anyone says. It is the weak link just waiting for the pin to be removed.
Upgrade to the 60 and larger brakes and semi floating axles designed to take the load.

Thanks, guys. I am still looking for the Dana rear end, but may also have a lead on a running 66 F250! Will keep you posted.
Michelle, I hear what you are saying. That was my original intention because I love that stock look. I had just finished doing the whole suspension and drive train when the 352 cratered(long story!) I was going to keep the whole thing stock except for the 545/C6 combination, in cluding the drum brakes. However, many others advise against it. I have to think about it, because I sure don't want it to die while my wife is far, far away with two horses in the trailer.
