How do you take the park brake handle off?

Hey everyone,

I've got my park/emergency brake assembly out of the truck so I can repaint it and also so I can put in the new firewall cover.

What I can't figure out is how to take the plastic handle off the shaft... there seems to be a pin holding it on, but what do I do with it?

if you can grab the pin with some pliers you can pull it out, or if not you will have to hit it with a punch and push it all the way through. Once it's through it should just fall into the middle of the tube and the handle will fall right off.

Normally you'd drive the pin out through the other side, but there's only one hole on the original handle. I used a die grinder to split the plastic and broke it off using a screwdriver. That'll expose the pin where you can either grab it with vice grips or drive it out with a punch. Of course you'll have to buy a replacement handle, but I bet you were gonna do that anyway.

BTW.... I am looking for a replacement handle for my '65. If anyone has a decent one laying around, I'd be interested.....

I haven't found a parking brake handle for my 66 either. It looks like a 66 Mustang handle will work.. and they're plentiful. I will try that if they're not reproduced for our trucks.

while we are on the topic of handbrakes, the greenslick seem`s to have a die-cast handle!, is this correct or is it a ring in?

That almost looks like the plastic is worn down and is white underneath but I don't think they're like that...

I got one off a 57 ford country squire wagon just like that ,Alan.
