I hate to have to ask.....why "slick"?
I've looked through this forum and searched the internet. I find no reference to why these are called "slicks". I'm realy starting at the beginning.
Did I mention that I'm new here?

Re: I hate to have to ask.....why "slick"?
i am not sure of the Origins of SLICK, who started it.... but i think it refers to the body styling of the 61-66 trucks.

Here is how it happened, When I started the club with Kid ... I got SO TIRED of telling people what kind of truck we were into..
After awhile saying " 61-66 Ford F-series trucks" got OLD. And try it with a person..they get this blank stare like they are going into a coma !
So, after hearing some older trucks being called EFFIES, and FAT FENDERS .. I just decide..Like it or not..we will come up with our own nickname...
So I posted the idea to badge our trucks with a nickname on the board , and as I worked in the garage I thought the older 60 style was so big and blocky, and the 67 on were much sharper , our trucks were slicker, a more melted flowing design than the ones before, or after them.. So, I posted on the board, what if we call the truck club Slick 60's to cover our body style.. I couldn't decide whether to spell out the 60, or use numbers.. another member said "Use the number for sure !" so that is how we went that way.
At the time the product SLICK 50 was advertising a lot so it sounded similar, and ok to me.. thats how it happened..
Also around that time we had some members with 57-60 models and they were complaining " Hey ! what about us?" "We need a name for our trucks" Someone came up with FRIDGES around that time, I have NO IDEA who,or if they were a member of our club.. but you want to talk about a PERFECT name for them ! It reminds me so much of those big broad fridges.. perfect...

Re: I hate to have to ask.....why "slick"?
......so, that clears that up.....and I guess the '67-72 trucks being called bumpsides is pretty self-explanatory, as is the dentside handle for the '73-79's:)
As for the '80-87's....since hearing the handles for their predecessors, I have been calling them disco-dentsides:)

Re: I hate to have to ask.....why "slick"?
so that explains it! I think it would be neat to have a short history of the website/slicks as a sticky for all new users. It'd be kinda neat. just a thought
Re: I hate to have to ask.....why "slick"?
What a great story, I had no idea. I first heard of the truck club from Tom Thatcher in Ticonderoga
NY. Tom rebuilt my FE 390 marauder engine for my mercury and had a 63 short unibody. He told me all about the "integral" cab trucks, I didn't even know they existed. That is when I got "the slickness" and knew I had to have one. Tom gave me the website info and told these fellas knew all about these trucks and would be helpful.....I sure am gratefull to Tom".........

Hey, back in the early '80's when I first had my 66, my dad used to say: "Get that slick outta here!" because of the oil-slick the leaky 352 would leave in the dooryard. D'oh! JK

I call the 80's trucks slab sides for obvious reasons. Ugliest truck Ford ever made. Even new you could look down the side and see waves from the poor stampings.

Re: I hate to have to ask.....why "slick"?
yep. just like the old "pharaohs" and such type plates. slick60s on the top and your town on the bottom. xxx booze bottle/dice/vice in the middle. something like that. it would be cool.
the toppers are cool too. i would do that as well.

yeah the 80s trucks were bricks or square bodies. I always called the late 80s trucks flat noses.
For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble

Re: I hate to have to ask.....why "slick"?
The club was actually strated as a joke between fodstick and I, He started the first site on Excite free sites and we thought we were about the only ones who liked these old trucks. When people started joining he called me and asked if I was joining under other names and I said no. We were not sure what to do as we did not anticipate people joining. We talked it over and decided to let it ride and see what happened and as they say the rest is history..................Kid
p.s. the first site the club name was spelled out Slick Sixties
