need help on this guys...

Post by cwindsor »

Ok here is what I am working with...

64 Slick with factory harness..
289 SBF motor
I have wired up the motor and the ign switch...

When I start the motor the truck starts right up But when I left go of the key it dies...
It's like the truck will run in the start start position...

I know for a fact the coil is loosing the voltage when I let off the start...

What wire supplys the voltage to the coil in the run position...

Any Help would be great!

Another question... Do you need a ballast resistor if you swapped to a Distributor and coil (New style...)
There are no points on this truck anymore.

There is a start position and a run position on the key switch. You need voltage going to the coil and ignition box in both positions. Depending on what you are using for ignition and coil. Example dura Spark with stock coil. You will need a ballast resitor for the coil.

During start the coil should get 12 volts, run 7volts or so through the ballast resitor. Also remeber the 12 volts in the run position to your ignition box.

You can split the wire going to the S on the soliniod. This 12volts during start run, or run back to coil. Also run to coil from the run position through ballast resitior. This is not right!!!!! Starter would always run Sorry.

If it is stock harness, there should be a fat pink wire to coil (from run position on ign switch). This wire acts as a ballast resistor. So if you have this wire you will not need the ballast resistor. Does your coil have one or two wires on it on the hot side?

I noticed when I put 12+ switched to the ballast wire (Pink) (Says do not cut) the truck stays running but the starter keeps going too..?

I am using a ProComp Distrib... and a MSD blaster 2 coil...?

any thoughts...

I am thinkinh the old motor had points..? (not sure)

There is a red\green wire going to the coil right now on the POS side and the Neg goes to the Distrib

The ignition switch must isolate the start power 12 volts, from run the coil power 7volts.

Some how it seems your coil wire in run is connected to the start line.

How did you switch the 12 volts to the coil?

I took a volt meter and test for the 12+ on the ign switch... When I found that I ran 12 volts to the pink wire.. When I went to start the truck it stayed running but the starter keep turning....

I think you need to do this. Connect to the wire at the switch right before it turns into the pink wire. Use this wire to run your ignition module(this will be 12volts in run).

I think it will work if you do do this.

Here is a test.

You can test bye hooking jumper from ignition module to 12 volts at battery. Then start and see if it runs after letting the key off the start position. I do not think your module is getting 12 volts in run. This will let you know the coil is getting voltage in run(7volts).

With the key in Run do you have 12 volts at your ignition module? Do you voltage 7 -12 volts at the coil?

You know you have voltage at both in the start psoition

I know I get 12+ switch at the Ign switch... But when the key is in the run setting I dont have 7+ volt to the coil...

It's like as soon as I let off the key from start I loose all power to the coil???

Does the pink wire connect to the run see picture blue letters. It will not be pink at the switch but you should be able to follow it. About an inch from the swith it should be pink.

Where is what I got....

I have two red wires and a yellow wire going to the switch....
On the starter solenoid I have a brown wire going to it and the signal wire for the start, on the other post is a red wire..

On the coil I have two wire on the Pos side of the coil, one from the factory harness (red with green stripe) and the other goes to the distrib...

Neg side goes to ground...

Pink wire not hooked up...

The way the truck is wired(stock) you get the full 12 volts during start. Sounds like you have that. ut when the switch goes back to run then the voltage to the coil should go through the pink wire, and to the coil.

With an aftermarket ignition you need 12 volts to go to the module in Start and Run. For instance if you had the ignition hooked to start 12 volts, when you let off key to run. Your truck would die. Did it run before and quit/break or are you in the process of wirng it? Adding something new?
