Steering Wheels

Post by bmcgc »

My turn signal cam is broke, my horn index is broken, my steering wheel and horn ring look like crap.

The 75 p/s column Im going to use isnt any better.

I really want to figure out if a 66 Mustang steering wheel will work. I can buy a red repop for $115. No sanding, no filling, no painting.

The various boards say that the turn signal cams are different and it will not work.

What if I used the correct year Mustang turn signal cam that goes with the Mustang Wheel?

Im no rocket scientist, someone must have had this idea and made it work.

I have not tried this, but do have a 67 rustang in the garage that I could take a look at. It would be interesting to measure the mustang column to see if you could do a complete replacement. You'd have to use the correct dash bracket, but it might move the wheel away as well.

Yes, any 67 and older Mustang steering wheel physically fits a stock Slick steering column. There are different turn canceler situations depending on years but it can all be worked out easily. In 68 the Mustang steering column got larger in diameter. The wheel will still bolt on a slick but looks odd. Hawkrod

I believe the Mustang steering wheels have more dish than the truck steering wheels... make sure to consider that before buying.

I have a selection of NOS turn signal cams from Shee-Mar, several styles of which are listed as fitting 61-66 trucks, even though each is slightly different:

But according to their application chart 61- 64 2WD truck, 65-66 2WD truck and 66 Mustang all use the same cam, SM-9. As do 67-72 and 73-77 trucks. See pages 14 and 15:

I need one also, and this is not one fits all situation. I believe I need the 14 but not positive on that. The Carpenter switch is made like the later Ford truck switches with two wires connecting to the cam canceler.
