Tractor Supply Company Tractor Paint

Post by ThinLizzy13 »

Anyone ever use Tractor Supply's tractor and implement paint? They have Ford Blue I was thinking about painting my truck. I'm guessing it probably lasts fairly well. Just wondering if anyone here has ever used it and what their experience with it was.
Thanks

Haven't personally used it, but considered the same route...did a lot of reading and the general consensus was the new "majik" brand sucked for spraying...too forever...as in days...to dry and that was with reducer and hardner...google or YouTube "rustoleum paint job"...paint your truck with a roller  but based on the results I've seen, if you take your time and put in the elbow grease, it's pretty impressive for the cost involved...I'm about to try it when the weather cooperates

I just looked that up. It's amazing what they did with 50$. And you're right, put in the work and the results are pretty awesome. Thanks for pointing that out, I think that's what I'll be doing

As long as you were able to either very accurately measure or mix enough to do your whole truck, you could theoretically mix up any color you wanted

I dont know about Tractor supply paint, the Magic brand I got from Rural King stores chalked up after about a year. It probably would have lasted longer if had a garage to keep the sun off as much as possible. It was also Ford Tractor Blue.

That's the key with any non-standard paint is the UV stability. It may spray on easily and look great but if it doesn't have the UV protection, you sorta end up wasting your time in the end.

I have used it
It lays down nice... But
Like others have said... Out in the sun... It does not stand up well
Spend another $100 & you can get a WHOLE lot better quality paint

Long-term verdict isn't in yet, but Majik Kubota orange, thinned and hardened, went on good; clear-coated with Majik clear coat on a small tractor. It's hard as a rock and has stood up well so far. For $40.00 a gallon, it's pretty good paint, although not as good as TSC's previous brand. If I had to top-coat it with SPI, I'd still be well ahead!

Modern single stage polyurethanes don't cost that much more...........
PPG Shopline is very nice stuff for the money. You use it single stage, or wet sand it & clear it.
Trick to this paint is a fine tip, whatever your "wet edge" is - that's what ya got.
If you are only gonna paint one a Harbor Freight HVLP gun isn't "too" bad - definitely OK for primer.
D&R Paint in Omaha (where I go) has a really nice gun that's only about $80! It doesn't say Binks but they have had real good luck with it, customers like it, parts & different tips are available.
Of course 80% of a paint job is prep.

I agree, Greg; unfortunately Shopline is quite expensive down here. I like SPI every bit as well, and it saves several hundred dollars on a paint job. Kinda limited on colors unless you want to mix your own, however. If I'm attempting a match, Shopline is first choice. The diamond anniversary three -stage (white) on my '96 Mark VIII comes in at $800, paint alone, my cost. Needless to add, this car will not be painted anytime soon, and will never go back original color under my ownership!

Here is a TSC "quickie" paint job, I admit to
Bought this truck cheap.... Got the motor running.... Slapped on some wheels
2 hrs sanding .... Taped it off.... Painted.... Sold a week later
If you think it looks like shite .... You should have seen it before

I painted all the metal kitchen cabinets in my shop with their Ford Blue . I sprayed it with a harbor freight HVLP gun and they still look good 5 years later ( granted they are not out in the sun as others have noted ) .

Five years ago, TSC paint was made by another major manufacturer; I don't know who makes the "Majik". Everyone I have talked with about it preferred the old paint, myself included. When they started the change-over, they closed out the old paint, and between myself and a friend, we pretty well grabbed all the local store had available, including the blacks and whites, and their most excellent,( and, did I mention cheap?) clear lacquer.
Speaking of the HF guns, they can be found on sale for as low as $12.99. Spend several dollars on the "warranty", use the hell out of them; when they start spraying poorly, take 'em back!

The local TSC told me that they were planning to stop carrying the Majik brand paints.

I don't know what paint it was, but my F250 was sprayed by the previous owner with a Wagner airless power painter...
He claimed it looks better than it did. It sure is a 'soft' paint,,,it scratches soooo easily.

Just out of curiosity has anyone gotten a decent paintjob out of rattlecans?
And how can you tell if a paint has a good UV rating? Will it say on the can or does it just depend on the brand?

The only thing I will tell you about rattle cans is you would be better off with a gallon of rustoleum some thinner and alot of small sponge rollers then you will be with rattle cans .

I have used Summit paint and it sprays very nice. It is made by Martin Senour and its pretty reasonable in price.

Having painted a car with rollers, I can back this up. While it is possible to get a decent job from rattle cans, it requires a lot of skill wielding them, and a LOT of cans. I don't think you'll save any money over rolling (or even spraying the 'normal' way).
