Put an ad on Craigslist and a really cool guy called me and said he had an old set of wheels and hubcaps from his '65 F250, mine for $40! Are these the dreaded split type wheels?
skidoorulz wrote:Yep those are them. There isn't a tire shop in the country that will mess with those anymore.
The big name-brand shops won't....
But the small town guys might
If the wheels & rings are solid and not real rusted

Same here 'Lucky23'. Cept for my 05 Deluxe. If you decide to do this yerself be careful with them lock rings and do'nt get in any kind of hurry. They are made to take off with primitive tire tools and a big hammer. Lay them down flat and stand on the ring using yer body weight as pressure and gently pry them off. They'll go.

Reason I ask is that if possible, I'd love to have stock period correct wheels and caps on her. I just don't like the chrome wheels on her now. Like that old stockish farm truck look(:
they could be changed on the side of the road. that was the selling point. remember, back when these trucks were sold, they were sold to work. mostly be ranchers and farmers. they knew how to do those things.

I see. You could pop off the locking ring, remove the tire and inner tube, slide another on, pound on the locking ring and inflate, right? Sounds logical. Why did they fall out of popularity? Are they known for being faulty?
ON THE OTHER HAND, I've been reading some pretty scary stuff about split rims on the inter webs this evening...some guys losing their heads, hands, and limbs! Maybe I'll look into other options...
if you want to get close, but be safe and practical. go the junk yard and buy some 16inch accurides. they were available on f250 until 1997 and e350 vans into the 2000s. i bought four locally for 17$ each. then find some f250 hubcaps off off a 68-74 truck. that's about as close to original looking as you can get and still be safe.

I agree, probably worth twice that to someone who needs/wants them.
If you understand what you’re doing, you’re not learning anything.

Yeah, I really like the look of split rims, but I'm gonna have to look for accurides. I'm gonna keep my eye out for solid 8 lug innies, but I know how rare they are...at least I'll have hubcaps if I do!
