Front bumper

Post by skidoorulz »

I just checked on a price to rechrome my front bumper on the 64 I am doing. $450 to do it plus freight both ways. Can anyone tell me anything about the after market repro bumpers? Who has the best one and I have also heard they are straight not curved like the one I have. Please let me know your experiances with tem.

AIUI the re-pops are not "correct" as to curvature and fitment. IMO you'd be better off having your -"correct" bumper re chromed, if budget allows. Pretty sure you'll be a lot happier.
If you understand what you’re doing, you’re not learning anything.

I bought the repo, real POS! Later I bought a used bumper and had it powder coated. It fits and total cost was 150.00.

I bought a repop front bumper for my truck. I disliked it so much that I took it to the chrome shop, had them put the proper curve in it, brought it home and marked it some more so that it would match the gravel guard. Then I took it back to the chrome shop for final grinding and then chrome.
It turned out well in the end.
I would recommend using a good factory bumper, having it straightened and rechromed.

What is the best way to straighten a bumper, if one wanted to do it them self?

I Agree, The Repop's Are Supposed To Fit 64' Through 67' And The Fit Is Terrible. Using A Bumper-Press Can Only Do So Much. By The Time You Shell Out The Money For Straightening & Chrome You Would Probably Have $650.00 Into It And It Still Wouldn't Look Right. I Lucked Out & Found A Correct 64' Bumper At The Junk-Yard, It's Not Perfect But The Overall Contour Is Way Better. :2cents:................

There is a chrome shop in Helena MT that I will use since all the replys on the repop have not been good. The good news is that my bumper does not have any dents or damage, the chrome is in tough shape after 50 years

From what I have observed, it seems that not all the repos are the same. The real problem as far as I can tell was Ford. The quit making the original but kept on selling the later bumpers with the same part number, but made these front bumpers to fit the 67 and up trucks. The rears were the same up until 73 when Ford widened the frame. The bumper was still the same, but the bumpers had the mounting holes moved out to fit the widened frame. You can use one of these by putting a half inch spacer on each side of the frame between the brackets and frame. Just the same as far as I can tell otherwise. Funny part of it is the earlier front bumpers have the correct curve from what I see. These have the earlier mounting holes unfortunately. Why they don't just go ahead and repop the same bumper with the holes in the right place for 64 to 66 is anybody's guess. It shouldn't be that expensive nor that much of a stretch.

64f100. Thank You! I was thinking that a spacer is needed to fit my 64 bumper to the 78 frame I am using, now I know. To anyone else on this site. I have a repop front bumper you can have for free. You or someone must pick it up at my place in Washington, Utah. I will not ship this cause shipping is a PITA.

I used a 2x4 as shims from my mount holes to frame on my back bumper and it worked great. Does a 67 to mid 70 bumper fit the front or are the holes off like the rear bumpers? Have a local U pull it with a few really nice chrome early 70 bumper I would like to use.

Wouldn't filling the holes and drilling new ones then rechroming be easier than cutting and bending?

I used the earlier type on my 62 and it still had the wrong curve. :(
It's a terrible photo showing my lack of garage space at the old place, but if you look toward the end you'll see the curve is way off

I have sent many to Tri-City Plating in TN and have done for some where I dropped them off at Charlotte Swap Meet and then in a few weeks picked up @ Carlisle last price I know was 385.00 Whoever does your plating Inscribe your name on the back, especially on rear paint the inside of bumper since so much washes up on it

Just a heads up to everybody in search of a 65-66 front bumper. I thought I found a honey hole, I was wrong. I found a website called fixmyrust.com, they have a listing for a 65-66 front bumper. It has a different part number than the 67-72, they told me it was a different bumper with "curved" ends. Happy day, happy day! Right? Wrong, I got it yesterday and it is the exact same as the 67-72. Haven't figured out what to do with it yet, I just thought I would let y'all know so you don't make the same mistake.

Here is a pic of how my repop fit after I got finished with it. I took it to the chrome shop, had them put the proper curve in, brought it home and checked it to see if it was what I wanted. I marked it, Ground some more curve into it and then took it back to the chrome shop for chroming.
Image
The outside edge of the bumper was originally out about another inch.
It took a lot of work but it was worth it when it was all done. The shop I used was local so it was easy to pick it up and return it.
I don't think that there is a repop out there that fits like this.
