Brake Line Diameters

Post by Hoss123 »

I'm about a month into a complete frame off (early '64 F250). Its going very fast cuz the truck was in great shape to start with.

As soon as I start reassembling it the brakes will be one of the first things I get to. Anyone here know the correct diameter of tubing to use? Best place to get quality raw tubing?

1/8 I think?

Merles (Parts Plus) carries very good brakeline. It is easy to bend, doesnt kink under normal conditions, and flares nicely. DONT buy the greenish black Crap from AUTOZONE.... it is horrible. Kinks badly, hard to flare, plain junk.

3/16th is the size. When we did the 61 we bought a roll of line and had fun putting it all together. I would recommend getting a quality double flare tool tho. Will save you lots of frustration. They aren't cheap but worth it.

my dad got a KD tools flarer from merles, and Blue point I think bender, makes real nice 2" diameter bends. It is a jig with 2 posts on either side of a semicircular die with different sized grooves in it. works like a charm!

Hey blackagatha..on the green/black line from Autozone

Post by winr »

I bought some line from Advanced Auto, it was greenish black.
It was a plastic kind of coating, I am having a hard time getting the flares to seal.

Do you remember the brand name ??

I used 4 mm tube greenish coloured, no troubles with bending or flares. just remember to lube the tube up a bit before you do the flare and when you are doing it up makes things slip in together better 8)

Alan,
Honey, If I say I`ll fix something I will, there`s no need to remind me every 6 months!!

that's the same CRAP I was referring to... I think advance is your region's version of Autozone...

I think it is terrible. it is hard to make seal, hard to flare, hard to bend, easy to kink, awful.

The shiny stuff from merles/parts plus looks pretty, softer alloy that is much easier to work, seals better, almost impossible to kink.

Have not noticed any rust/etc so that concern is marginal. Granted, I am in AZ.
