I find this chimp attack thing disturbing

I work at a zoo and know a little about the great apes.
Orangutans are very docile but can wreck you if they want to, same with a Gorilla. Chimps are pretty much the worst of the 3. A gorilla may crush you to show you who's boss, an Orang will smack you around to get away from you and are fully capable of pulling off a leg or something but chimps will kill you for kicks, in a group and not in a reactionary way. They'll do it on a whim and once the adrenalin hits they are pretty much unstoppable.

About 10 years ago we had a chimp on display who could get his fingertips between a steel framed glass window and the beam above it. About a 3/4" gap. A guy was feeding it popcorn. Only its finger tips protruded. It grabbed the guys finger with its tips, popped it off at the 1st knuckle and ate it. It was like a pair of deadbolt cutters

This lady had a 200lb chimp. That's heavy by zoo standards.
Its like having shoes full of nitroglycerin. It'll go off eventually.
If I had a neighbor with a chimp I'd shoot it or move.

when i saw this heading i thought it was going to be about the obama cartoon that came out today. it has 2 cops who shot a monkey and there talking about the stimulas plan. the whole country is sreaming racism. now that i looked at your post and read the article i see what your talking about. the problem i see in the article is that they used the term "domesticated". that animal is a wild animal being kept as a pet. its far from tame or dometicated

stimulus =a "high" feeling most politicians get from inhaling the fumes of burning pork.

back to the chimp
people should NOT be having them for pets and definitely not give them mind altering drugs (apparently the chimp was given Xanax right before the attack)
they might be cute and maybe somewhat intelligent, but so are my dogs.

Keeping a 200 lb animal that has 10 times our strength that can be unpredictable is just stupid.
I have to admit that I have kept "non standard" pets myself. I used to have several large saltwater aquariums, one of the things I had were 2 Leopard Sharks and 1 Bamboo Shark - we are not talking your buy it at walmart, relative of a bullhead, sort of looks like a shark here. Leopard sharks are quite docile and even shy, but YOU DON'T PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE TANK DURING FEEDING!
One of the 2 Siberian Huskies I had was a Hybrid - 75% Timber Wolf (she was absolutely wonderful).
You have to KNOW what you have and have the proper knowledge for their proper care - proper care involves much more than feeding with these!
After all, the Hybrid was form a proven line and was never mistreated, the sharks weren't gonna sneak out of the tank and attack someone.
This is not the first time someone has had a problem with an exotic animal.
Heck even a larger domesticated parrot can slice you digits off like a hot knife through warm butter. They can snip a broom handle in two.
This really comes down to there are a lot of people out there who have absolutely 0 common sense.

These animals were born in the deep jungle and there's probably a reason for that. Same as these elephants that have crushed their trainers and gone on rampages and subsiquently been shot. They're simply not meant to be here. They're wild animals.

This is just more fuel for those Freaks at PETA!!

wow, this is the first ive seen anything about this, it really amazes me people have the nerve to think they can own something they do not even educate themselves on, and on top of it all give them drugs made for humans thinking they are going to work on other species without even knowing the consequences, if you ask me the owner should have been shot instead, but as always the animal does what it does instinctively and then pays the price for humans. Never ceases to amaze me

On top of all above, she hired the anmal out for TV Spots & commercials for the profit she got.
The critter paid with it's life for just being & doing what it is/was & does. Phil is right, 200lb's is
zoo or preserve grade wildlife.

At least here we use tranq's to put critters out, not Make them dead. We share our state with Gators,
besides the football team, Black Bears, Wildcats, occassional panthers, and some mean tourists.

There was a captive tiger shooting just outside a preserve near W. Palm a few years back. The Cat
was legally registered & licensed in a fenced preserve & well cared for among several other critters.
Law enforcement decided to handle the situation & not contact Wildlife Commission people per SOP.
It ended up with a Tiger, who was trying to return to it's preserve being needlesly shot & killed by
It was done by this uniformed patrolman who claimed he was put in great canger and feared for his life.

Fifty or so witnesses disagreed with that position, saying the patrolman just wanted to shoot a tiger.
It is a sad situation & wildlife always pays for Human greed, error and lack of disipline or common sense.

There was no action against the law enforcement officer, in spite of his failing to act he was instructed to.

The outcome has been FL Wildlife commission has stepped it up & now is the ultimate authority in all cases.

It's too bad things like it happen though.

I really respect these guys.
They get a 4000lb elephant to do what they want and not die.
The Toledo Zoo has a pretty amazing elephant program. These guys are military in precision and caution

I got to go in and take these pics for an article (their quality is criminal)

I just saw an up date on that story about the Chimp, and it keeps changing!, but has anyone noticed the similarity of the Chimp and it`s stupid owner?, boy if she had bigger ears, there could be doubt if they shot the right one!

I'm thinkin' she was the Chimp's Mom.

Some suggest the lawofficer who shot the chimp may be it's father. There might be some domestic violence involved
there in fact. We must wait until a Lawyer gets ahold of the case and then maybe we will learn the real truth{NOT},
Or if the family can sell story rights to Hollywoo'

or perhaps a TV- "Telly" network.

Now there's a true to form American tale of woe, Huh?
