'65 F100 Daily Driver

Post by TOsborn »

Hello all, thanks for letting me onto your forum. I've been lurking around for awhile now, but I'd like to share my truck buildup with you all.

For starters, it's a '65 F100, 300 six, 3 on the tree, 2wd, bone stock. Bought brand new in Richland, WA by my great grandfather, passed down to me via grandfather and dad.

Recently I sold off my daily driver as I got tired of messing with it, and have begun driving the truck 24/7.

Lately, I've done:
-complete engine tuneup
-all new drum brakes up front
-all new shocks
-completely clean out all the crud built up in the body/under cab (only rust is drivers side floorboard and drivers passenger fender corner)
-tear into every nook and cranny or this thing, making minor reliability fixes as I find issues

Coming up soon:
1: 16" wheels that will accept the stock dogbowl hubcaps, and offset the rears out to match front track width
2: front disk brake swap (still gathering parts)
3: 5 speed swap from 3 on the tree (tranny from an early '90s Fseries with same engine)

And, I just recently drove it from Tacoma WA to San Francisco CA and back. Took the coast on the way down, it drove perfectly the whole way. Engine runs like a watch. Only issue was a darn flat tire.

Any recomendations on tire/wheel combo's that will clear disk brakes? I was planning on ordering the wheels custom from Stockton.

15" 5 lug wheels on a 5.50" bolt circle that will clear the disc brake calipers:

1973/79 F100 2WD / 1975 F150 2WD / 1975/2014 E100/150 / 1976 F100 4WD / 1976/96 F150 / 1978/96 Bronco.

Disc brakes introduced in 1976 for 4WD's, 1976 last year for F100 4WD. Some 1980/83 F100's have a 5.50" bolt circle, some have a 4.50" bolt circle.

Styled steel and aluminum wheels introduced in 1977 F100/150's, Bronco's got 'em in 1978. These wheels and later variations thru 1996 can be used on all 1961/72 F100's.

F150's went to metric wheels in 1997, but no Econoline has metric wheels.

I love it! I have a '66 with a 300 and a 3-on-the-tree, but I love column shifts and I'm keeping mine that way.

Which 5-speed are you planning on? I had a '94 F150 with an EFI 300 and that accursed Mazda M5OD-r2. The truck ran perfectly and while it wasn't the '66 I wanted, I'd planned to keep it around. Never can have too many trucks...

Then, with a mere 140K on the clock, it began getting stuck in gear, popping out of 2nd, and generally feeling really sloppy. I checked the seals--fine--flushed and changed the fluid--they use ATF in a manual?!--and it improved not one bit. After doing a lot of research, I learned how notorious they are for a short and costly life. And at $2500 to rebuild a tranny I'd never cared much for in the first place, I sold the truck off--with a clear explanation of why I no longer wanted it. Guy who bought it wanted the motor, the doors, and some other odds and ends. "Those trannies are junk," he laughed, as he loaded it onto his trailer.

My two-cents: Avoid the M50D!

Get a ZF5 out of a small-block eqipped F250. Though costly, they're much better transmissions, and will last as long as your 300 (well, maybe not that long, but at least 1000 years :D )
Working on a '66 F100 with a '71 240 and the original three-on-the-tree...

The Wheel Vintiques wheels are usually cheaper on Summit Racing and the shipping is free. To use the original "bottle cap" hub caps, the "Series 14" is the right wheel but you'll find more choices of size with the 15" or the 17" version instead of 16". Here's a link to the 16" http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wvi-1 ... /overview/

Also, you'll have a problem using the "bottle caps" with a disc brake swap because the cap is too shallow t o fit over the longer spindle on the front. You could probably use a 1/2" spacer behind the wheel and the "bottle caps" should fit. Someone else may have another idea.
