The J hook limits the travel of the I beam thus keeping the spring from falling out. I would just hate for that to fail. Mine doesn't have the hook on the top bucket, maybe the PO removed them...

Thanks for the link Alan. Looks like mine just the J hook I've got circled. The hat shaped thing just sits on top of the bolt that holds the radius arm to the I Beam. Today I was under my '65 checking out the leaking power steering box shaft seal and noticed that my springs didn't have any kind of spring retainers other than some J type hooks on the beams that hooked into a pocket on the frame. I used a 79 manual m/c on mine and made a spacer to mount it to the firewall without cutting the rod, but you can always modify the push rod.
