Something new every day
The set back rear axle gave the extra room between the back of the cab to the rear axle to create the storage area for the spair tire. Another one of Ford really better ideas.

Interesting, taht this should be brought up at this time. I noticed one of these kits on Evilbay something like a week ago. It was NOS, and the guy wanted some crazy price for it, or at least i thought it was crazy. I remmember those from back when the trucks were new. It was an interesting idea but not all that appealing to me, except for the fact that it was an easier spare to get to, than under the bed. Which reminds me, I have NOS clip nuts for the under bed spare tires, if anyone need one. Forgot I had these. 2$ for the clip nut, plus postage.

Mike, I do not think it would fit your truck. Those trucks had the rear axle set back further than a regular long bed truck. The distance between the back of the cab and the rear axle is a greater distance then on a regular long bed.oldtrucks wrote:My new truck could use a bed like that. The spare is mounted on the front bumper and I hate it. I would change the bed if I could find one like that. Mine is the extended wheel base Super Cab so it would fit.

You would need to have the 140" wheelbase model for the S/CS bed to fit correctly.

My best friend had a 75 F-350 camper special,460,supercab and hauled an "Amerigo" 10 1/2' camper on it.The rear axle was back farther than a regular truck. The whole back of the camper opened up into a bed, like an an frame, and a queen bed over the cab.It had the spare like that.I had a 76 f-350 super cab,460, camper special with the tool box on the side in the same place.I also had an Amerigo camper we hauled on mine and towed a fiberglass body jeep behind it.We traveled all over the country in them.Made a nice rig!!! I have some pictures of them somewhere.

Ya know, I was looking at that thing and thinking about how neat the interior bed finish was and got to grinding on an idea last night.
I've been looking for a way to put a small box inside the bed for a mini-jack, some tools and maybe a couple of flairs or even a tire repair kit and fix a leak bottle.
The bed IS coming off my truck for bed liner this spring.
Hummmmmmmm.
