JC Whitney Wiper Delay, Transmission, Rearend. HELP/IDEAS???

Post by banjojelly »

After 3 years of my '65 being restomodded and put back on the road. I have decided that it is time for some changes.

First things first. I have been wanting delay wipers ever since the first day it drizzled and i flipped the switch back and fourth for a 6 hour round trip. Not fun. So while the truck was coming out of winter storage (by which i mean the pile of leaves in my driveway) i decided to put a delay box on it.
Now i have read all of the topics on here that i could find about it. But im still stuck. My first mistake is that i ordered a delay box from jc whitney  . here it is - http://www.jcwhitney.com/wiper-delay-wi ... ilterid=j1 . I read the reviews but i was positive that i could figure it out. i have spent two days on it, but no luck.

What is happening is that as soon as the relay in the delay box closes, it then will not delay the wipers. they just run as normal. I have single speed wipers with 3 wires. im colorblind so i cant tell you what colors they are. i use a test light and an ohm meter to trace wires. my wife was kind enough to label the wires on the delay for me so that i could wire it up as per the instructions. no luck. Has anyone ever added a delay box like this before or can anyone school me on how the wipers work? ( i know one is the park wire, one is the switched wire, and one makes it turn off. but im not sure how they actually work together.)

Issue number two. I have a manual 3 speed mated to a rearend with 2:50 gears that i pulled from a 75 lincoln town car. the motor is a 240 with the offy dual plane intake, a holly 4 bbl, tuned split dual headers, dual point ignition, a lumpy rv cam, and its well balanced. tons of power even with the crazy gears. however in 3 years i have had the motor and tranny split apart 5 times. two clutches, a throw out bearing, and i had to rebuild the mechanical linkage twice. The thing bucks like a mule taking off in first gear. im pretty good at getting it going smooth, but i made the mistake of letting a buddy borrow it for a parade and the clutch didnt make it 5 blocks. aside from burning out clutches the mechanical clutch linkage is getting super sloppy from all the bucking and i dont trust it anymore.

so.......will a C4 or C6 bolt up to my motor? ( and before someone suggests it, no i will not replace it with a 302. i love straight 6's ) Will a C4 even hold up to those rearend gears? I hate to change my gears because at 70mph im only turning 2grand. it cruises all day and gets 20+mpg. Would i be better of going with an older vacuum shifted AOD and dropping the rearend gears to say a 3.73? i have even debated going to a T5 tranny and doing a hydrualic clutch and figuring out a way to mount the master and slave cylinders. or should i just learn to love the smell of burning clutch?

What are your guys thoughts on these?

Thanks in advance :D

2:50 gears with a six??? NFW you went though several clutches!! I would think the five speed along with some steeper gears would be the best solution.......and as a bonus, it will be floor shift, meaning you don't have to rebuild all that column shift linkage:)
or, if you could find a later eighties/early 90's donor pickup with a 300/5 spd, you could gain some cubes and the 5 speed at once!!

It has a nice vintage floor hurst indy shifter that i pulled from a van at a salvage yard. no column shift anymore. i think i have too much into the 240 to yank it right now. besides, she has been good to me and i would hate to put her on a stand and never run her again.

I would seriously consider dropping that ratio, even a little bit will help save on clutches.
Where are you located? I have a 2.75 for sale.
A C-6 will rob you of a lot of power, about 20%, so a C-4 would be better. Find one behind a 302, 351W or 300-6. I do not think you will like it, though, with that high of a rear end ratio.
As for the wiper delay, I would ditch the aftermarket thing, and go Ford.
Find a '73 - '79 F-100/250.
Harvest the wiper motor, the dash switch and the wiring harness complete with delay module.
You should need to cut only 1 or 2 wires, the one to the key for power, and the other to the squirts motor.
Swap out motors and wiring.
Use your '60s bellcrank, though.
Shorten the switch stem to match your other knobs on the dash
That's it.

As usual banjo is dead on...theres a couple other choices of trans/rear ends to consider depenidn on your truck use.am goin by what you say which is you are using your 240 no matter what.Good for you.a late modle zf 5 speed what mentioned, good choice but might be pricey compared to my suggestions the orion toploader cast iron 4 speed over drive[t.o.d.] or the aluminum case s.r.o.d. 4 speed overdrive[lighter duty than t.o.d and different o.d ratio] that was a great combination in 80's f1oos.Both thes trans can be had with not alot of huntin and can be rebuilt at home with patience, but are not known for problems unless abused. You can for this first,or change out that clutch eatin 2.50 first,2 grand rpm and 20+ isn't so nice when you smell that smell alot, think a bigger diameter clutch would help too....
Yep, this is Pete!

It has a ten inch clutch right now. Any idea what the ratios are for the od on those two transmissions? i could maybe match that with a different rearend ratio that will get me close to having that same 2.50 as the end result.
