changing the oilpan. any wise words?

Post by ford6t5 »

hey i am going to change the original oilpan of my '65 300 L6 to a rear sump oilpan of a '85 300 L6.
any tips and tricks?

i also have the gasket from felpro. this is a 4 piece gasket. two cork like side gaskets and two rubber gaskets. on the rubber one tranny side gasket there are 5 or 6 rubber pins (dont know how to say it) are they going in somewhere or do they need to be cut off?
any tips on how to install the gasket in combination with the silicone gasket maker?

i"m changing the oilpan to get my jag frontend installed. the original one interferes with the subframe and if i'm correctly informed the rearsump won't. we'll see.

thanks

the tabs will go into holes usually in the timing cover. The biggest thing is clean all surfaces with laquer thinner before reassembly. Get rid of the cork gaskets and get neoprene gaskets. cork sucks!!!

Get all the surfaces super clean, then throw the new gaskets in the trash. RTV ultra black real thick for the end seals and a thin layer on the block and pan, then bolt the bolts up TIGHT before the stuff sets up. (you have plenty of time using the ULTRA stuff as it sets slower. Let it sit a day then it will never leak, and those gaskets won't spend the rest of their life trying to squeeze out from where you put them.

I would test fit the engine to your truck with oilpan and jag front end first before sealing it up,Gaskets aren't cheap
.
I use contact adhesive on cork gaskets ,they don't leak and they don't push out .

hey guy's ,

the old i beams are out off the truck and the jag is installed for now and i have to hook up the brakes and steering. all in all not that hard but more work than anticipated.

i also installed the new dorman rearsump oilpan, a great new pan and good fitting. but now my dipstick touches the cranckshaft because it sits now in the higher area off the oilpan and not in the deep area.
what to do?
shorten the dipstick so it doesn't touch the cranck but the you can't check oillevel.
or is there a relocation set or something?

thanks

Twan: Find out the year & model of the donor pan, and get a dipstick (AND TUBE, if required) from that same year & model.

Why not have someone meassure the 85 dipstick and see if yours is to long? Im guessing the dipstick mounting location is the same in all years.

you've got a point there.

the '85 is a rear sump and my '65 is a middle sump so the dipstick is in the deep part.
now i've changed the pan and the dipstick is in the shallow part so cutting the dipstick is an option but is the reading off the dipstick still accurate?

anyone out there who has an '85 that can meassure the dipstick?

thanks

or find out how much oil the new pan holds, put that much oil in and make a new mark on the dipstick at the oil mark
