I got a good deal on some 1 3/4 DOM, so I based this build off of that. Little did I know at the time how pricey and difficult it would be to aquire all the pieces I needed. This thread is mainly geared around the control arm build. All the rest is in the western region, under Crockett checking in.
First order of business was to mount the rodends to all mounting points and position the axle in the center line and measure the length of the bars needed. Cut to length and check positions.
Next step was to bevel edges at a sixty degree angle. To aid in a greater surface area for the weld bead to grab to. After that drill holes for a rosette weld. The rosette weld is there for safety sake.
Next I gave the rod end bung an 1/8 gap between it and and the bar. Tack welded in four positions and compared to the other matching bar prior to final weld.
Ran a first bead making sure to melt the bung to the bar. Looked good to me.
Then ran the final bead to build slightly higher then the surface. To aid in grinding smooth later. After weld beads cooled I did the rosette weld.
I got the beat up makita grinder out and ground the best I could with out going to deep or deep at all.
After grinding I used a sanding disk and air grinder medium cut. All that really did was shine things up. Unhappy with that I switched to my belt sander with a used 80 grit. It worked pretty good at getting the scratches out. I then switched to a 2 inch sanding disk I believe it was an 80 grit. That worked out a whole lot better.
Once all the grinding and sanding was done. I could install the rod ends. With alittle anti seize on the threads they turned in nicely to a point where they started to get snug. Probibly from the welding. So in the vice with ya! I used a crow bar to work them back and forth to loosen their grip. It worked and was able to turn by hand in the end.
Once complete. I mounted them to the chassis. I thought this part of the build came out nicely and wanted to share. As well as inform. Thanks for viewing and have a great day.
