The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

Brake Conversion Question

Post by noley99 »

Would a brake booster/MC off of a 97 ford truck work on a conversion to power brakes on my Uni?

Ashley,
if it bolts up it's possible that it would work on a Slick - maybe.
You would need to have the same brakes as the 97 though - either disc front or 4 wheel disc.
The Master Cylinder for disc brakes has a stepped bore - the "front" is bigger than the "rear" (although they are reversed on the master cylinder) - the calipers require more fluid than wheel cylinders.
If you are adding power brakes to a 4 wheel drum setup you'll need a drum/drum power brake master cylinder.
to have the system really work right you need to make sure the bores in the master and at the wheels match too.

Going with disc on the front and stock drums on the rear. I found this Booster/MC on CL for $50 and thought it might be worth a try. I think I may just order a new set up that I know will work and that will save me some hassle.

Wouldn't matter anyway - Ashley has a straight axle truck.

Ashley,
Find out if that booster/MC is for a rear disc setup - if it is you don't want it.
If it's disc/drum see if you can find out the bore sizes to compare with the pieces you'll be using on the wheels of the truck.
I think I would find something from a 67-79 if it were me. Bore in the MC for those years will match the GM calipers you'll be using and the wheel cylinders on the rears.
I am not trying to rain on your parade - you want things to work together properly for your brakes.
I am a certified brake tech (I don't do it for a living anymore but), I won't even experiment too much.

Thanks Greg, good advice... exactly what I was looking for. I've decided to just get the new set up. I have worked a deal out for about $180 to my door with proportioning valve.
